Fitting a front cross rail to roof bars?

i find the roof bars a bit pointless with only one cross rail at the back, has anyone ever fitted a cross rail near the front so the bars can actually be used as a roof rack?

The rail at the back is for strengthing and stopping the rails from flexing. You can buy actual cross bars for carrying they come as a set of 2pc.

I just think it would be better to have a permanent fixed one at the front matching the rear, then no need to mess with removable bars

On the Freelander 1 ..... it used a fixed strengthen bar at the back. I Then used the same bar, cut down, fitted to the front. I then didn't need the clamp on cross rails.

Anything can be done. Thumbs Up

I have built many roof rails to fit the FL1, 3dr and 5dr.

I actually panel dressed the front roof from a sheet of 3mm aluminium.

Extended 3dr roof rails to fibreglass roof panels.

This is the one and only FL1 that has both a 3dr & 5dr rails.

This has already been asked in another thread.

Do not load anything on the fixed cross bar, it is not designed for that purpose. It is only attached by 2 rivnuts each end.

Also the centre support is only attached to the rail by a self tapper. I have upgraded this to an M6 Nyloc bolt as our outback roads removed the self tapper from both rails! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
