Reference to "MY"

Excuse my ignorance, but what is this constant reference to "MY" ?

If it's Month Year, then what's the point of say; MY2010? Surely 2010 says enough.

(Incidentally, I fully understand the registration system of; 05 - 55; 11 - 61; 19 - 69; etc)

Thanx in anticipation.

Roughly speaking the Model Year is governed by changes to equipment and build normally announced in the Autumn of the previous year.
The car is then built to that specification as MYxxxx. However it may be actually built up to a year later, and registered onto the road even later than that.

Just to confuse matters more the MY is normally given as the succeeding year … MY15 was announced and started in the autumn of 2014. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 76k+ miles) (MY2015)

prime example is 2010 cars, when the first facelift occurred.
a car could be registered in October 2010 on a '10' plate but be a MY11 (2011 facelifted)

likewise in 2012 when the 2nd facelift came in, some 62 plate cars are the 2011 facelift version and some are the 2013 facelift version. That one is a major difference in specs etc.

@Cherokee

your avatar shows you have a 2010 TD4 HSE in silver so will depend on when it is was made/registered in 2010.

if that has the older style front bumper then it is a model year 2010 (MY10)

if it has the facelift front bumper then it is model year 2011 (MY11)

RogB

I used to confuse the hell out of dealers/factory, when I had a FL1.

One time I visited Lode Lane (Jungle Track) on exiting the site a security guard stop me at the barrier, he asked Sir could you tell me how many miles you have completed ? I replied 48K, no no he said how many miles ? he looked at my odometer ..... and yes it read 48K miles. He filled in his clipboard. hmmmmmm

What he didn't know was two weeks earlier I had fitted the MY04 front and rear bumper to my ...... 2000 yr model. Laughing

Once displaying my FL1 at Billing Show, I heard a guy say "why would you fit a X Reg plate to a new vehicle ? Rolling with laughter

The dealers couldn't understand why I had a centre chubby box/armrest in a X Reg ....... I bought the parts and fitted it myself !!

The best trick was the Service Dept would ask for the key to the vehicle, I would hand them this ....

....... hmmmmm never seen one like that before ???? ........ I replied, I have another one, identical !

. those were the days, Rolling with laughter

Thanks Rog for the clarification - in that case I deffinately have a MY10 which I will remember for future reference.

Thanks for correction, LR do put the year in front of MY, so it is xxxxMY.

The Defender Family is the workhorse of the brand. Exported to more than 170 nations worldwide, the Defender made a name for itself in developing countries, on farms and in militaries around the globe as a durable, utilitarian vehicle that could reliably transport its passengers to all four corners of the globe no matter the terrain. The Defender was last exported to the US market in the 1997MY and concluded global production in January of 2016 following almost 70 years of ongoing series Land Rover production.
