Insurance - they even take the p*** when it comes to pets!

Our cat is 12 years old and over the years we have only ever made two claims - 2007, about £1700 for a broken/dislocated rear leg and 2017 after being attacked by another cat or perhaps a fox, £500.
As expected the annual premium has risen year upon year, it would be cynical to say to cover the payouts.
Renewal has just come in . . . up from £522 to £681 wtf A 30% increase Evil or Very Mad Suggested to Significant Other we should get shot and buy a 2nd car, the insurance would be less. She wasn't impressed.
So now it's down to trawling the sites

£681? Is that fully comp or just third party, fire and theft? Rolling with laughter

You’re lucky. They normally won’t pay out twice on the same injury/condition. Our friends had a horse and in the end, they could only get insurance to cover the nearside rear leg! That’s not a joke by the way. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

Agreed, they won't cover repeat injuries. We sort of hope if he limps home it's the other leg Wink

Once out cat got to a similar age we faced the same issue (and other insurers will not take on a cat over 12) so we set up a separate bank savings account to cover the any costs and I transfer in a fixed amount each month - the cat account currently has more in it than my bank account.

Are you able to shop around or will other insurers not touch the cat due to age? Even after declaring claims, other insurers are cheaper than the renewal quote of the existing one. Learned to drive in 2011.
Bought a Micra - great little car
"Upgraded" to Kia Sportage - hated it
Proper upgrade to FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k
Reconditioned diff at 70k ish
Sold at 84k and now on a DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental

I insure myself by putting a monthly amount in a pet account.

Went on to MoneySupermarket and found the same insurers would insure the cat for £442 Shocked Have since called to cancel, they didn't even ask why.
Will be going back on to MS site to whittle down the quotes as there's a lot of decent ones on there even less than the £442

We have just changed insurance for our cat as he is 15 in March. A lot of things that are included in the cover are not covered for him due to his age, so why pay for them. It was £400 odd but the new policy is £100 odd. We have been lucky and never had to claim for him. I don’t known who the policy is with as he Mrs sorted it out.

i stopped insuring my last Springer Spaniel when she was about 9/10 as I had never made a claim (she had been insured through a couple of companies over the years). The premiums were up to about £50 p/m and just not worth it.
It was until her last year that she started costing me money at the vets for age related stuff rather than standard jabs etc, and by the time she was put to sleep in December had cost about £400. Just not worth insuring older dogs to be honest if they are generally healthy.

My pup however is fully insured, got a decent policy for only £11 p/m and I wouldn't be surprised if I need to claim on that as he is a lot more of a live wire than my old girl was Laughing
