Some good news for once

While I understand that some of our members are going through hell health wise I thought just had to share this.

My lovely wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer last September - less than 16 months after being given the all-clear from breast cancer, prognosis 2 years to live.

We have been to The Christie in Manchester several times a week since - brilliant facilities, wonderful staff. They offered us a trial of a new immunotherapy drug, it's a blind trial, some get the drug some get a placebo.

We got our 8 week results this week ...................... overall 46% reduction in the cancer ....... in 8 weeks - bloody amazing.

I don't think she is on the placebo. Thanks to the British Medical Council code of practice, if there is significant improvement, then the drug company involved has to continue to supply the drug after the trial finishes.

Not out of the woods by a long way, she is still in a lot of pain, and riddled with the evil cancer, but even if it stops working we have been given another 6 months - beats winning the lottery any day. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Wow, fantastic news.

Do you know if the cancer is a specific type ? I ask as my next appointment is with a further specialist team in Leeds tomorrow that deal with one particular aggressive type as I have a very rare internal melanoma attack and they will be gong over my options (apparently they may have some).

Its a cruel disease, just 2 months since my own very serious surgery to remove the tumour and I actually feel OK and yesterday I walked getting on for 10 miles but inside its not finished its dirty work. Had I not had a unscheduled scan soon after my surgery I would not know I was not in full remission.

So one and all do not sit wondering if you have any problems, get to your GP asap if you have the slightest concern about lumps, moles or bleeding (I thought Ernie the haemorrhoid was just having a bad day). FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Both my brother and sister were found to have cancer in the middle of last year, within weeks of each other. Both have had procedures and now we must wait.
Each have a partner who is their carer, I help in being there for them all.

that's great news and im sure everyone on here wishes her well and hopefully a continued recovery

Im doing what will be a sponsored walk attempting the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge (3 highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales, approx. 24 miles in 12 hours).
There is a group of approximately 80 of us attempting it mostly in support of Macmillan and Cancer Research, both truly great charities which will hopefully provide some funding towards trial drugs such as these going into general practice.

All the best to you and SWMBO Andy Thumbs Up

My Best Wishes to both those suffering, and to the ones who support them.

At times of stress it is important that the carers do remember that to keep the show on the road they must look after themselves, including eating and sleeping.

On a similar subject, I have several of my close family members attending the NHS at the moment, and I would like to note my appreciation on how all the NHS staff treat me and my family with kindness and compassion.

That's my good news. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

The cancer is secondary breast cancer - in her bones (neck back pelvis ribs) and in her liver. 20% of her pelvis is/was showing as cancerous. Aggressive enough after 16months.

The treatment is an immunotherapy targeting oestrogen sensitive breast cancer - they already have one that targets protein sensitive breast cancer and it work well in some cases.
It unmasks the cancer so your own immune system can get to grips.
Doing well if you consider that Gill's immune system is at an all time low thanks to 8 sessions of chemo, when the chemo is finished they continue the drug for another 12 months, when the immune system should recover and give the drug a better chance to work.

Not a cure, but one injection a month is well worth it for however long we have got left together.

Wouldn't be a Macmillan nurse for a pocket full of gold - they do a wonderful job that would have me in tears every night after work. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
