smoke from under bonnet...fumes in cabin

ok...first post here...please advise if not in correct forum...thanks

drove the Freelander 2 (60 plate MY2011) into local town last night
had to spend around 10 mins in stop start traffic en route

noticed a faint whiff of fumes in the cabin after getting thro the traffic......further along there was a significant belch of fumes/smoke into the cabin thro the dashboard air vent and smoke escaping from under the bonnet.

stopped vehicle...peered under the bonnet (no flames fortunately)...opened bonnet and smoke wafted away.....and stopped.

with vehicle parked up...there was fluid (think water / no odour) dripping from front of drivers wheel arch....this continued for 30 minutes.

no warning lights and fluid levels check ok.

the drive home was uneventful ......and again this morning ...all seems ok.

was bought a month ago and has a three months dealer warranty...so into the garage on Tuesday

ideas please???

The air ducking pipe, that goes across the top of the engine from the air filter is prone to dripping oil and smoking at the joints

Was it definitely smoke (smell of fire smoke), it has been known for the cabin to fill with smoke like vapour from the air con.

it wasn't "fire smoke" smell in the cabin...more of a diesel/paraffin smell...but definitely could see the "vapour/smoke"

If the smell was diesel/paraffin like, then also take the engine cover off and check if any of the injectors leak-off pipes are OK and are not leaking on the hot engine.
There is a bulletin for cars in your MY range that can develop an injector leak-off pipe leak.

This happened to mine 2 days after buying the truck

Turned out to be the aircon was Censored ( jammed ) and the belt had been slipping which in turn had the Censored bearings glowing! Smoke was peeing out of the bonnet filled the cab with a rank burning smell

Might be worth a try to see if it happens when you turn on the aircon

thanks Dan......it may well be related to aircon, but having tried to repeat the problem (aircon on/off) ...still didn't get the same problem.

as per you post...I didn't get a "rank burning smell"...just fumes.

thanks anyway...another avenue to chase up.

kind regards

Just had the leaking injector pipe syndrome this afternoon. Diesel smell, lots of smoke but everything else appeared normal. Called LR recovery & AA attended swiftly & tightened the injector pipes. To br frank, this was probably the fault of the fuel saver company who recently worked on the car not tightening them up! Rather ruined a family trip to the Norfolk Coast! Also getting the diesel out of the foam underneath the engine cover will be a bitch! From a time when dinosaurs weren't just confined to zoos!

update :

nothing more than a worn o ring seal on the breather pipe it seems....if it does give trouble again it is a simple case of replacing the rubber pipe and a five minute job

thanks to all for previous advice.

Reviving an ancient thread:

Which O ring on which breather pipe?

The fuel return line... The black lines with the green tabs that attach to the injector. Remove them from the injector and you'll see the o ring on the injector side of the connection

I'm going through this myself at the moment - it can sit idling for a while with no leak, but get someone to hop on the accelerator and I can see it running down from that connection on my injector 1. Even more noticeable watching a cold start.

Heard of others having pin hole leaks in fuel rail, or the fuel line from the rail...
