Replace factory Alpine head unit with Sony AX-1000 Mulimedia

Looking for some help please.Has anyone fitted an aftermarket head unit to there FL2. My existing unit is an Alpine and as far as I know it has a fibre optic amplifier. Is there any place that can be recommended for a harness or whatever is required to allow me to fit a Sony AX-1000 Multimedia unit in its place. Question

One thing I haven't seen answered is to do with the sub. The InCarTec page noted that the sub will stop working and a new amp will be required. Would this then be connected up to new head unit and could you remove the current amp and put the new one in its place using the same power source? Learned to drive in 2011.
Bought a Micra - great little car
"Upgraded" to Kia Sportage - hated it
Proper upgrade to FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k
Reconditioned diff at 70k ish
Sold at 84k and now on a DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental

grumsel, thank you for your reply. I think my unit is the mid range alpine with 9 speakers and not the dolby version so I am not sure if it still has fibre optic or not so I think I will have to remove the unit to find out unless someone knows otherwise.

Chuckalicious, I was hoping it was going to be something simple with a harness connection but seems as though there is a lot more to it.

I think all alpine radios have the fiber optic cabling, only the basic versions don't have it.

grumsel,
I noticed in the link that you posted about the fitting kit it mentioned about fitting another amplifier but not sure if I would have to or if it is something I can if I wanted.

I think the extra amplifier is only needed when you want to keep the subwoofer. I have not used the kit, just saved the post when I was thinking of doing it. Maybe booktrunk has more info but he has not posted here for a while here. You could try to PM him?

You don't need to use the sub so don't need the new amp, but I think the system might sound a bit weak without the sub. Seems a shame to spend loads of money and time doing it and not keep the sub.

I've considered doing it many times and just decided it's not worth the hassle or cost. The new head unit doesn't really do anything my smart phone can't and when connected by Bluetooth it's just as integrated. Learned to drive in 2011.

That is also what I use. I bought a cheap Bluetooth adapter and connected it to aux in. I even use my smartphone for listening to the radio because it sounds so much better than normal FM.

I use an app called tasker on my Android phone to start Waze and start the streaming radio when the phone connects to the car and stops them when the car disconnects. It even selects the destination in Waze during normal commuting hours.

I bought a Pure Highway (can't remember model number) which does music, phone and dab. My head unit is never off of aux-input now. The sound of dab radio is so much better. Learned to drive in 2011.
