Main dealer tyre price match + software update cost free?

Looking to replace all four of my Pirelli Zero 235 60R 18 tyres on my 2013 MY SD4 HSE. It's still on the original tyres from new and they have covered 48k and still have around 3mm, so I want the same again as they have lasted so long.

Land rover have quoted me a high price but their website states they will price match any competitor for the same tyres.

Does anyone have any experience whether this is marketing BS or whether they do actually stand by their word?

Halfords are the cheapest for these tyres Β£116.99 each but I thought if I can get my local Land Rover dealer to match the price, then I might be better getting the dealer to supply and fit in case I have any issues in the future.

Also wondered if there's any other benefits from using the main dealer for tyres e.g. I think I read on here somewhere that they don't charge for software updates if the car is in for other service work?

My local independent tells me that only the main dealer can do software updates so I'm guessing that this may possibly be an opportunity for that to be done whilst the car is in for tyres.

Was told by my dealer ( the trusted one) that every time they service a Freelander it gets updated. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Julesk :
Did he really mean they update the FL2 every time its being serviced ?
If so what are they updating ?
Are JLR constantly bringing out updates for the FL2 ?

Or did he mean they always connect the car to the computer irrespective of anything else. Jules

I would go with Halfords myself as Β£116 fitted is a really good price Thumbs Up you will not get a software update by simply having new tyres fitted. Also I really don’t think Land Rover would waste any money developing updates for a car that is years out of production.

Jules, he said that it gets plugged in every time it's in and automatically updates where required. I asked how does it updates when freelanders are no longer made and he said the updates are generic so will update whatever is needed. IE. Out of date. Thumbs Up If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

If you register on Land Rover TOPIx you can see whether there are any updates available for your car. (But this doesn't include software updates of the "if customer reports a problem" variety - these are only applied where necessary). Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Well I am registered with Topix but can't see where the uodates page is.

Although Halfords have the best price I have read some very bad reviews online today and would rather use a dealer. Will speak to Land Rover today to see if they really will match tyre prices.

Whilst I would never take my car to Halfords for servicing or repairs, surely they can't cobblers up tyre fitting?

I tend to buy my tyres from Camskill and have them fitted locally but maybe Halfords, as the cheapest in this case would sell you the tyres and deduct the fitting element from the price, leaving you to go to your favourite tyre fitter.

I can't imagine, in my wildest dreams nightmares ever buying tyres from a main dealer... they would probably take the car to their nearest Tyres Π― Us shed.

Lancaster Land Rover Welwyn used to take my (then) car to a local tyre shed for its MoT test as they didn't do MoTs themselves. I imagine that tyres always went there too.

I bet they can Very Happy
I've had two cars trashed by tyre fitters having no mechanical comprehension of how to lift a car. One required new inner and outer sills at both ends in the end!

I now have two sets of rims for all cars (well one car has 4 sets, but dont tell the wife), and just drop the rims in and swap the wheels myself. Tyre sheds love it as I'm never in a rush, they just do it when they can.

I think this might be stretching the truth a little. The dealer tool (SDD) does get automatically updated, but the car doesn't. There are still software updates being created for the FL2, usually because of an Evoque issue which is comparable. And dealers will usually plug the tool in and do a read out of trouble codes (DTC) if there are any as part of a service. When they plug it in it will also flag any 'warranty' updates, ie software it really should have updated. But as said, unless you have a specific issue they dealer wont just update all modules, there is no way to do this with the tool and its typically very time consuming for which they can not recover the cost.

To do a single update on a car will take 45 to 60 minuted. It will likely involve; go and find the car, prep the bay, bring the car into the bay and hook up to BSU, plug in the tool and let it pair, enter the right symptoms in to SDD to get to the update option (this takes a certain skill), start software download from server, upload to car, clear down all faults, test all systems again, close session and add notes to report, close down tool and disconnect BSU, drive out. Some troublesome modules can take 2 to 4 hours. Imagine trying to do that to all 52 modules on a 14my Range Rover!

Well, as I am not an expert in the subject and would not want to call anyone a liar I will go with what the dealership says thanks.
Could it be different as Florrie is still in warranty?
Could it be that they know they cannot mess me about after previous issues(different vehicle)?
Maybe they know I've expressed an interest in new Defender?
Could be it is just when in for service as it's there most of day? If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.
