I see one of the comments below that article suggests that the V8 was never the correct engine for a defender. Clearly that person never drove a V8 Land Rover! I had it in Classic Range Rover and early (split-door, 4-speed, vacuum diff) 110 and at that time it was streets ahead of any other available engine option - only surpassed (perhaps) when the 200TDi came out - and even then the power and flexibility of the V8 had benefits in some situations. Everyone will say that petrol is bad in wet conditions, but it never let me down in the wet, even a couple of times with water over the bonnet on river crossings! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto
