Yes, I’m going to take the diesel filter off again tomorrow
So I can have a second look at the wire
I did give it a good pull, just in case the copper has snapped
Could it be the alternator?? 2008 xs

Check the alternator pulley is working correctly. It has a one way clutch bearing, they can fail by seizing totally or by slipping. It should grip in one direction but be free to rotate in the other.

Sounds daft I know but...

If the valve in the throttle body fails, it can jam partially open, this will allow the car to start - just ie 400rpm, not enough to kick the alternator in - so charging light doesn't go out. And to add insult to injury no engine management light.

Code reader will tell you that the throttle valve is out of position. -

The nice man from the AA just rammed a screwdriver strait through it and jammed the valve wide open - car then worked fine for 2-3weeks until I had chance to replace the unit Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Could be the issue below.

SSM48697: Freelander 2 Diesel Auto Delayed Throttle Pedal Response
Customer reports: After starting the engine and selecting Drive, followed by pressing the accelerator pedal, there is a delayed reaction from the engine and RPM remain at idle for a few seconds with the battery warning light on.
Root Cause: Start to run map speed threshold not fully achieved when FEAD fully loaded.
Action: An engine calibration update has been made available for download to resolve 'reported customer concerns' only. A software update is available on SDD from DVD125 P4 with software management pack 69 or later. The software release will only apply to Diesel Automatic vehicles.

Wile running it just starts charging after a few minuets and responding to the throttle
