Buying a used FR 2

Hi All,

I am new to the forum and this is my first post Smile

I am returning to the UK from Australia with my family and we are looking for a decent 4wd/suv for around £5/6000. I have been looking at GS manuals (without a tow bar).

I have found a few online all either 2007/8 with roughly 70/80000miles.

A couple of questions I have for the group are:
1. What are the major things to look for on a used FR2 of this vintage?
2. Are there any major reliability issues?
3. What are your thoughts on buying a diesel now that it might become practically worthless and hard to drive to places with the new rules of diesels (I understand that this is cheap vehicle so there won’t be much to lose in terms of value)?
4. Does the FR2 have a dpf and if so are there any issues with regeneration?

1) Rust - some get dipped in the sea, Rear diff bearing, Haldex
2) As above
3) None of the places where a SUV is designed for have restrictions on diesels. SUVs are unsuitable for cities.
4) Some do , some dont. If you only do short journeys then dont buy a diesel, especially if it has a dpf. Jules

First question you should ask yourself do I really need a 4x4 for your budget you will be looking @ a old complex car that has had a lot of use that cold cost you big ££££ in repair bills.

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e S Manual Zermatt Silver

I'm new to Freelander 2 ownership but will weigh in on a couple of points.

I believe DPFs really only started to be fitted from 2010 onwards so older models should be okay. I'm told if the 8th digit of the VIN is a B it doesn't have a DPF.

I bought a 2010 TD4e with 87k on the clock six weeks or so ago. Nothing major needed but I do want to check out/service the haldex.

It has however needed a few small repairs:-

1. Rear wiper motor (notorious for seizure due to water ingress)
2. Driver door lock assembly (again another ropey part)
3. New throttle body (plastic gears stripped. Plastic LR? Really!?)

Generally body panels don't suffer too badly from rust (but check wheel arches under the trims).

The chassis and underside however is a different story. Obviously not too bad if it's just surface but look carefully for rot.

Despite a rocky start I wouldn't want to change it. Love my landy Very Happy
