Like many others before me and many more yet to come it's my turn to deal with my "blown" wheel arch protectors

I've read any number of previous posts about these bits of kit and wondered how those of you had fared who decided to completely remove and do without the original protectors?
Also I noted that some had improvised with rubber trim obtained elsewhere - how did that work out in practice?

Having examined the dirty useless things I have just taken off my car I am inclined to do without them - they appear to have acted as a dirt and mud trap which in my view risks rotting the wing edges more than if they were not fitted at all.
I noted in previous posts that some people thought they were to prevent stone chips - any views on that?

I know they are available from Duckworths and elsewhere - for anyone else reading this in future the LR part numbers are:

I've been wondering exactly the same.

I bought some trim from eBay last year, but haven't got round to fitting it yet. Would be much simpler to just leave them off. Steve

I've replaced most of my blown ones with some edge protection strip from eBay , which you just cut to desired length with a hack saw. Did first one about a year ago and still ok.. Not as tall / deep as the original one by a few mm but seem ok so far. I just looked up edge protectors on eBay and they were supplied by somewhere called the metal house

Mine will be going in the bin soon , as previously mentioned they are just a trap for damp , dirt etc .

I found it yesterday but not sure about the grip and I don't think it has steel wire incorporated.

Deano how many metres did you need? My guessing is 2 metres in the front and 3 metres at the back? The original width is 21 mm i think.

I bought 4 mtrs. I have only got one left to do at the front, which is still intact. I have enough left to do this when it goes. Its cheap enough stuff. Yes, the original is ~ 21mm . I think I remembered measuring it, so this replacement is not as tall, but it covers the edges

Don't know if it a LHD thing but the trim on the front of my FL2 was not the same left and right.
