Can You Intermix Conti Cross Contact UHP & UHPe Tyres.

Hi,

Been using the search and seen a few questions about intermixing UHP & UHPe tyres. I may have missed it but didn’t really see a yes or no answer. I understand 235/55R19 105V UHP are no longer available. I only need 2 tyres so if you can’t intermix between the 2 does that mean I will have to go out and buy 4 tyres even though 2 of the tyres are only 50% worn. Any advice would be gratefully received.

i think i ran the UHPe at one point

the UHPe are the low rolling resistance tyres, and i'm sure i checked with Continental if i could and they suggested not too, and they have a different level of grip Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Hi

I personally wouldn't as already said the E is a low resistance tyre and due to this offers a different grip level than the normal set, this could in a worse case scenario mean an unequal grip level when needed altering the expected handling or braking having said that I am no tyre expert so might be wrong.

I personally would bite the bullet and get all 4 however I am a little carefully about my tyres as I will only have matching sets of premium tyres as I see that tiny contact patch is the only thing attaching me and my family to the road while travelling at speed so I suck up the cost for peace of mind.

Not a cheap thing though as my wife tells me come change time Laughing If your going through hell, keep going!

On a slightly different tack, ignoring the UHP/UHPe issues, the fronts on mine will likely need replacing in the next six months - should I fit the new ones to the front or the rear, and then in say another six months replace the older ones? Or bite the bullet and replace all 4? Obviously if I replace in pairs, I'm restricting myself to the existing brand, Scorpions. Replace all four I could go with another brand, but then the full size spare is also a Scorpion.

Although the front axle does most of work in propelling and steering your car, it is safer to have a car which will understeer on the limits. Therefore the general advice is to fit new tyres to the rear of the vehicle.

I noticed that I had UHPe on the front and UHP on the rear of my landy 6 months after ownership!

The UHPe were 6 years old and still had 4mm tread still left on them. Didn’t like them at all as they squealed quite a bit.

The thing I noticed was the side wall depth, despite showing the same tyre size 235/55x19, UHPe was deeper than the UHP tyres on the rear by about 15-20mm.

So pleased I got rid of them all last week. So yeah, I’d get all new 4 tyres the exact same if you can.

Will miss the original UHPs. They were a great tyre.

Very useful, thanks Ian.
I could really enrage certain parties now by asking “which tyres are best “ but will use the search facility to gain some opinions Wink

From what I can see, apart from the 'black round ones' ( as Bob rightly says ) having tread, but no damage, tyre law does not say much about tyres.

Be compatible with the types of tyres fitted to the other wheels

https://www.theaa.com/driving-advice/legal/tyres

tyres must be suitable for the purpose of their use

https://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q405.htm

May the best tyre advert win!

Although I look for lots of small spaces in the tread to move water, and for extreme mud or snow chunky bits on edge of tread, or is that too simple, FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
