Really enjoying my first Freelander 2

Hi all,

So had picked the car up on June 23rd, pretty much mint condition 34k XS and we’ve really hit it off, I’ve been a defender man for years, but with extra motorway miles now covered daily I wanted something a little more civilised for the roads.

Since purchase I’ve done a few of the popular mods (found here), like Black grill, handles and vents, added window tints and Evoque wheels (grey as I have never liked silver wheels) and de-chromed it’s ass.

I’ve also taken it upon myself to get the rear dif and Haldex services for my own piece of mind (although there were no issues).

There are a few more things I have in mind, I will be getting my head around SDD very soon to add a few CCF mods to add things like puddle lights and rear view camera. I may try a few of the harder mods I’ve read about other forum users undertaking when I can.

Trouble is, I guess Landrover now have 3ish years to come up with something else I like, because I’m really not impressed with their current range.

Cheers

Shaun

Nice motor, same colour as mine. Wondered whether the black details would suit it, seems to Bow down
I came to Freelander ownership from a Disco 2 and very happy I am too but also concerned about what the next vehicle will be, as you say current Landrover offerings do not impress..... Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Would be interested to hear how you get on with the rear view camera as it's something that's on my list

I'd be interested in hearing how you get on with the camera as well - something I am considering adding as it would make hitching the caravan a little easier.

Echo the feelings above on the Freelander 2 also - think LR got it spot on, just a shame the current range don't tick boxes the same for me.

Very nice

Did you get the grille done black at a spray shop ? Thinking about it myself at some point. Also, with the black side indicator thingys - were they sprayed or did you just buy some black ones > They're easy to swap aren't they ?

Thanks for the kind words guys Thumbs Up

I will be getting SDD in September, so will start updating on software mods (camera) after that.

The front grill was sprayed at home, be sure to mask well, clean really well, 2 coats of primer and 4-5 of a good gloss black, I then used 3 coats of automotive grade clear coat to get a good hard gloss finish. It takes a while allowing the layers to dry before add the next but it’s come out looking great, and should last years.

The side vents were from eBay and they came with smoked side repeaters, and the door handles were from PowerfulUk and are proper replacement handles rather than covers.

The chromed ass piece and the D pillars were wrapped in gloss black vinyl wrap

Cheers

Shaun

Hi

Don't think I'd attempt spraying myself - i always make a mess with paint repairs. It must be tricky masking the LR badge and the silver piping surround ?

It was actually really easy to mask, the honeycomb section isn’t welded to the silver surround and there is a small gap all around, so you can get tape under the surround and no risk of overspray... having said that, it’s a easy job for a body shop, so may as well just let them do it. I would have been pretty peeved if I’d messed it up tbh Big Cry

Buy yourself a new front badge before you start tho, as the old one is not reusable after it’s been peeled off. Thumbs Up

Cheers for the info

I'd get a sprayer to do it anyway I think. I've got some blemishes on my grey one - on the silver surround and in one of the grey honeycomb cells but will probably wait till they get worse before doing it. Its costing me too much this year and not much has gone wrong ! Also didn't know the LR badges peeled off - I thought it was all part of the plastic oval thing

Cheers

Looking very nice Thumbs Up

Tho my preference would be black wheels and keeping the chrome rear strip (as it matches the grill & fog light surrounds and adds a little 'touch of class'). Wink
To me the black strip makes it look a bit more 'basic' trim ..... but hey, that's only me.

Enjoy it and keep on modding. Thumbs Up FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Thanks Ronp,

Tbh yours was one of the few I’ve been using as yard sticks for what I wanted.

The wheels are perfect in the flesh, don’t think I’d change anything except maybe I’ll up the tire size when it comes time. The blacked chrome strip is pleasing me right now, but it is only vinyl so if I get bored it can go back pretty quickly. Still deciding if I like the light guards, and as that’s more of a perm I ant fitting, I’ll need to see them in the flesh till I know for sure.

Cheers

So did you mask the chrome surround of the grille and basically paint the rest black? It’s the chrome effect strip that shows discolouration on mine, the grey bits of the grille are perfect. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

This is what I had:

and this is how it looks now.

Only the center "Honey Comb" part was painted. I masked inside the line you can see between the center and the silver/chrome surround.

I was aiming for the look of the "Dynamic" as shown in the 2014 brochure (it didn't have the body kit in the brochure).
