Australia 2014 Freelander 2 2.0T SE Auto Fuji White
Philip Gen2 D3S 5000K HID Bulbs. Yellow Centre?

I recently purchased some Philips Xenon D3S White Vision gen2 Plus 5000K +120%

Being Gen2, they are incredibly bright. Like ridiculously bright!

However, for the first 10 seconds only the beam is pure white, then it starts to yellow in the centre.

Could this be burn time? They've been on about 12 hours so far.

The seller has offered to swap them for 6000K, however, they are not Gen2 and those only +50%.

I have OEM HID units, however, I have a retro-fitted relay to supply 12v power to them, bypassing the need for the ECU reconfig (I bought them off of another Freel2 member like this) - could this affect them? What’s the volatage of the HID OEM?

I have the Phillips Gen II 5000k in.
Much better than the OE 4300k Osrams.
Perfect white beam, better match for the signature lights which was what I was after but there’s been a
noticeable improvement in output so they’re even more impressive now.
Blindingly bright and crisp cutoff pattern.
Highly recommended.

Thanks for quick reply Stu.

Struggling to understand why they are yellow in the centre. Do they need time to burn in?

Yellow pattern can be seen at the centre.


Yet they look super white from the sides...


For the first few seconds the beam is white:


You can also see Yellow on the sides of the projector

Sounds really different to mine.
On startup, quite a noticeable blue hue and then the intensity really increases and goes
Bright white. Whole process last about 10 seconds. MY15

Perhaps it’s the non-ECU config.
I have 12V lead from the battery that sends power to the units via a relay.

OEM HID units are 50w aren’t they? Perhaps this retrofit is still providing 35W.

They bulbs seem genuine. The eBay retailer had good reviews..

OE HIDs are 35w.
Applying higher wattage causes them to run at lower K. MY15

That must be it then. They are running at 55w. I bought them with this conversion kit in place.

I have options, get 6000k bulbs or get the mod removed and the ECU config enabled.

6000k’s are generally lower Lumens right?

5000k is as high as you can go (4800 is optimal for maximum lumens) before lumens drops off noticeably.
4000 - 4300 is as high as you want to go for fog conditions, any higher than 4300 and all you do illuminate the fog causing a solid wall in front of you hence why OE are this K. (Not a biggie here in AU).
This is comparing HIDs of same wattage. MY15

Thanks. And just to clarify, the higher wattge warms the Kelvin rating (lower).

If that’s the case, I figured a swap to 6000k bulb may produce ~5200k. I wonder if the lumens would increase when a 6000k bulbs is ran at a higher wattage.

Yes.

If your comparing apples with apples then anything above 4800-5000 then your after a “styling”
Effect as lumens drop significantly.

If you increase wattage then Lumens output increases and k drops. By how much I’m not sure but I think
There’s efficiency and longevity downsides. Also if your after the “boy racer look” (blue) then you have to go for an 8000+k bulb which then defeats the purpose of pumping through extra juice! MY15
