I really like the look of the new x trails. Only thing that puts me off is they seem a bit on the small side and I'm not convinced about them offroad.

I think the problem with the new X Trails is the size of the engine. IIRC (someone please correct me if im wrong) the main engine on offer is the 1.6 Diesel, but its a very big car and my concern is the pulling power from a 1.6.

They are however a very nice looking car, spacious and well equipped but with the glass roof there is ledge runs round the inside edge of the glass that I reckon would just be a magnet for all sorts of junk.

My brother has a Mazda CX-5 which again is a very nice motor, looks really nice, capable in the snow etc even in FWD spec, spacious, etc etc (apparently just been voted most dog friendly boot!) .... but Christ on a bike is it dull to drive !!!! 2.0D engine EuroIV 150/175bhp but there is zero thrill out of driving it. Gets from A to B and does what it says on the tin but dull as dishwater.

We looked at a Mazda and it had black leather seats, black roof lining, privacy glass etc but no sunroof so it was like sitting in a small dark room with the lights off. The new ones I believe have a sunroof?

apart from the colour that looks pretty good.... and being Suzuki it will be surprisingly good in the muddy stuff too

now if only LR can make a bigger version of that and call it the defender Whistle

But more so if Suzuki made a (much) bigger (four door) version.
A proper looking 4x4 and at a relevant budget price in comparison to LR etc...... I'd certainly consider one. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Tambora Flame

The original Suzikis where a solid green laning tool by virtue of their diminutive dimensions.

I agree with a point made above though that perhaps hold out for the new Defender.

Speaking of Suzuki I noticed the other day that a Vitara now just looks like an ordinary car, not an off roader at all. ----------

funnily enough I was thinking the same about the current Vitara yesterday.
There was one a few cars in front of me at the lights and it was the same height as a normal hatchback behind it so at a glance didn't instantly look like an off roader.
That said both myself and my wife like the look of the Vitara and are considering one to replace the current Hyundai i30 used as my wife's car.
I think the new Jimny looks good, wasn't sure seeing the spy shots but looks better now it is officially unveiled. It's to small to be a main car for us but wouldn't say no to one as a fun runabout.
I have limited experience with them (drove one once years ago) but the even older SJ410 my brother had was a barrel of fun.

These smaller cars would be ideal for nipping up a snow covered road.
However, for towing, and the rougher stuff I am convinced that size matters.

I believe that when things get tough lots of torque is very necessary.

The Fl2 has quite a bit of weight (for towing), a large slow revving engine, and a torque convertor automatic gearbox.

Any other gearbox or electric drive cannot beat these qualities. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

We had a SJ410, brilliant car although quite thirsty but would go places that a Defender found difficult as it was a lot lighter.

Incidentally just got back from a few days in France where we had a hire car, a Kia Rio 1.2. Apart from the fact that it had the steering wheel on the wrong side and it was a manual I was very impressed with it. The build quality was good, very well kitted out and considering the 7 year warranty my wife is looking seriously at it to replace her Peugeot. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
