noisy tyres perhaps

If you have the dreaded whine from the rear of the car how many miles have you driven before having the diff fixed. My tyres are about half worn and there is a definite whine most obvious at 60-70 mph but almost silent at 80 mph (driving in europe !). I have driven to Italy and back (about 2500 miles) and the noise seems about the same, so do I change my tyres although they are only half worn ? and if so can you propose tyres that don't make lots of noise when only half worn.

swop them from front to rear and see if the noise goes/changes. Common sense isn't very common.

What tyres?
What wear?
What car mileage?

Pirelli Scorpion Zero all season.
About 4-5mm left
Car milage 64000

All tyres have a slight step on the leading edge of the tyre blocks which I think is the source of the noise. Seems that the blocks have too big a gap. The whine is more obvious when the road is hot.

I've had the diff whine and I've had a whining noise from rear tyres. The diff was more a rumbling sound and I could somehow tell it was from the centre of the car. The tyres I thought were wheel bearings but it went away when I got new tyres.

Seriously, have you tried earplugs? Great for night time, driving, kipping on the car ferry, flights, etc. I buy them in boxes of 250 from tool hire shops. Throw away after 3 days.
