Now I know I don’t stand a chance Alex 😂

I guess there’s no way for the home mechanic to diagnose it then

Perhaps that makes it simpler! If there are only two things that can trigger the light coming on...and you can link this to an oil change...and there is no reason to believe that there has been any change that should have affected the VCT... Then it points to the high oil temp scenario - which fits nicely with the five minutes running before the light comes on. So this in turn suggests that the oil is not circulating properly or not cooling properly. Since the only things you’ve changed are the oil and the filter, and you are sure the oil spec is correct, then (on the Occam’s razor principle) it would suggest that you check the filter. I presume the fill level is correct? 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

I hadn’t thought to try another oil filter, it was advertised as the correct one and looked the same.. I might buy another one tomorrow and swap it over (oil level and type is correct)

Thanks Worms

Thanks joe
From that it may be something to do with the valve in the housing ??.... maybe

How do you actually check the oil pressure in a 3.2 engine, anyone know where to screw in the pressure tester

So I opened up the filter housing (again.. I’m getting good at that).. and thought I’d found the problem, there was a little plastic disc free in the bottom of the housing.
1st thought of course is that it’s come off something but couldn’t see where
2nd thought it’s this that’s blocking oil flow so I got it out, reinstalled the filter buuut light still coming on

The paper element is supposed to clip onto a plastic stud located inside the cover. It holds the element quite tightly so you know if it's on correctly or not.

Is it this plastic stud that's broken off?

I looked at the cap and all looked to be ok and the filter clipped in and stayed in place so I assume it’s ok

For anyone interested, I had a look under the sump and found this, goodled the serial number and it’s an oil level sensor, pretty easy to change out but not easy to get (in Australia anyway)

Paul you’re a genius, that’s exactly the little piece I found in the filter housing thanks very much for the help... just need to find one of those spring pieces... you’d be better than a genius if you can steer me in the right direction for that 😊

Thanks again Paul

When mine failed I looked for the spring with the rubber seal

But I wasn’t able to find it

So I bought the entire housing and removed the spring with rubber seal

Note: Volvo makes a few different versions of this housing for the 3.2 and 3.0T

I bought the least expensive one and I harvested the spring with rubber seal

Volvo part # 31359138 was the cheapest I found

I glad to hear that my post was useful (as you can see I got no replies)

I was starting to think that I was very unlucky to get this failure

But now at least I am not alone

Take care

Paul

Thanks Paul, getting parts here in Australia is a pain in the butt... wonder if it can be repaired ?
