Age means nothing to me, as above my car is always on a private plate. In fact I took the Velar on a 67 reg knowing that I could’ve had an 18 reg a month later. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

years ago when you had a plate change on 1st of March a new car was special, but now with two plate changes every year you simply don’t notice new cars

Absolutely, most can’t be bothered even to work it all out either.

Anyone who takes a vague interest in their registration (and is prepared to justify spending out on a new car), is now more likely to buy something from DVLA anyway, thus rendering the whole age identifier system redundant.

A regular plate on a new car often means it’s a fleet/rental/contract hire/company/loan/deeply uninteresting car now anyway Rolling Eyes

Really interesting to hear the two different perspectives on this. I have never bought a brand new car-I preferred to let someone else take the initial hit on value and pay cash and actually own it. In the olden days it used to be a Ford/Vauxhall at 6 months old. As I got older I preferred something a little more premium so I have to wait until they are 2-3 years old.

I was, however tempted by the low prices you see advertised so spoke to two people at work who I know have PCP's. Our secretary has a VW Up and pays £140/month for 3 years. She then hands the keys back and gets another, usually without having to pay anything extra as the dealers are desperate to sell them. The latter makes a great deal of sense-£5000 for 3 years motoring is affordable for most people if you can put up with a boxy super-mini!

The second person wanted a Discovery Sport when they first came out. She is paying £550 a month on PCP for 4 years. I have no idea what the final payment is but if she hands it back she will of paid £26400 + initial payment and have nothing to show for it other than happy memories. I can see that for the self employed this may make sense (I am assuming it can be charged as a cost to the business rather than an asset hence CG's accountant liking the idea). I decided PCP's weren't for me-I get upset when my cars lose £5-8K over 3 years-to be happy to lose £26K+ on a car over 4 years is something I will never understand.

Off topic slightly,

I know a guy who is an owner driver haulage contractor

He runs an old ERF B series 4 wheeler.

He told me he gets the same rates as someone with a brand new Scania!

Suppose he is the one making a good profit.

Now I am not saying my 85yr old Morris Ten is as good as a new car to go long distances, but its jolly ok to go to the Doctors and back. Cool

My car isnt really a business asset, as my pickup fills that role, I can rightly claim some business use of the car, but then I have to admit some private use of the pickup.

not my field really hence I let the accountant sort it, I did used to log mileages at one point, after a previous accountant over did the business usages and we got a mild tax investigation. At work

Mild investigation meaning, the accountant had a one on one visit from mr tax regarding me, rather than a full blown audit. mainly due to me living in the farmhouse of a rented farm and not showing enough of the rent as private, they tried to value the house rents, mine and my dads at more than we actually paid the landlord for the whole farm. Rolling Eyes , so decided to look at our motoring costs at same time. At work

If you were applying for leave to remain, that would be quite enough to get you deported and to have your passport stamped as "undesirable", making it pretty much impossible to work anywhere else either. See https://qz.com/1275866/the-british-governm...-migrants/
Don't know if this would apply if you tried to settle outside Yorkshire... Whistle Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
