Boot not opening properly

Recently had problem with boot lock only partially unlatching from Fob. It is then open such a tiny amount that it is impossible to open it or slam it shut!! Leaves interior light on, and cannot lock doors with fob while in this situation. In the end I used the emergency key to lock car up despite the boot door being unlatched; then unlocked it on the fob.

Any suggestions as to cause of original problem? Life is not a dress rehearsal!

Mine did this yesterday, I had to remove the trim off the boot whilst still locked remove the 3 torx bolts and wiring plug then kick the boot open. Smash the plastic off the lock then manually screw it to open the latch to remove off the car, you can then re-latch it so it closes properly and locks the car on the remote until a new lock arrives...

That sounds horrendous. Is this fault avoidable by replacing anything before it happens?
