ASBUG

No stores will close Whistle Maybe not but the HQ's and ASDA unionised warehousing will be decimated.

Merger is already being paid for by the staff - pay round last week was typically less than half that of what inflation is running at. Crying or Very sad FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

All American goods in through the back door also, This shouldn't go ahead as its going to cripple some suppliers. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

But do you remember when Walmart first took over ASDA in 1999 and it was supposed to be a devastating move for the UK retail sector? It never really happened. History is littered with companies that have tried to move into different countries and failed eg
Tesco into the USA
M&S into Europe
B&Q into China
Electromart into UK
Bunnings into UK
There are successes of course like Aldi and Lidl

The last one is interesting as Bunnings (Australian) bought Homebase and have completely misread the UK DIY market and taken a huge hit on their balance sheet.

It's taken 20 years for Walmart to realise that the UK market is not like the US. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

But is it a double bluff Dorset? Walmart will have 42% of the new joint company and in 10 years could take the lot.

They originally purchased ASDA with spare cash and contrary to popular belief (as ASDA is not quoted here) it still makes a handsome profit for Walmart every year. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

The FT this morning reckons that it's really all about Amazon moving into food. They are giving Walmart a rough time in the US and are getting both Tesco and Sainsbury's worried over here (hence Tesco's deal with Booker this year and Sainsbury's deal with Argos). Also Walmart are looking at opening in India and need some more cash.

All I know is that I sold my shares in retailers a few years ago as the profit margins they operate on a wafer thin. I did look at buying some Amazon shares the other day but at over $1500 each I feel that I have missed the boat. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Shocked Amazon into food, God knows what will end up on your plate at teatime as I ordered a fishing lure from them and when it came it had morphed into a screwdriver Embarassed Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

The statement was "there will be no redundancies or store closures as a result of the merger" he didn't say there will no redundancies or closures due to other reasons, they may well be due to reasons not directly connected with the merger it's how the news is quoted not what the management thinking is. To you and me it may be connected, to the the bean counters and higher management it isn't Rolling Eyes my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

A friend used to work at our local Sainsbury’s and she has several contacts there still. She was telling me today that numerous cuts/redundancies have been made to supervisors and team leaders over the last few months in the build up to the merger being announced. New contracts are being issued in September to those remaining and this will lead to the staff being trained in new areas and clauses being put in so that bosses can deploy them to other stores beyond their usual store. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby
