New MOT rules

Just in case anyone hasn't seen this.

I note the bit about headlamp washers, this could be difficult to test as the algorithm for when the actually work seems complex and a bit random in my experience. Note also the DPF comments. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Instead of vehicles over 40 years old, it ought to be owners over 40 years old that are exempt. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I'm an MOT tester and if you really wanted to get past this at the time of test, there is a way. I'm thinking more for those of you that have fitted later lamps in your older FL2's (as I did when I had one).

From the official inspection manual:

You don't need to test headlamps on vehicles if:
•they're not fitted with front or rear position lamps
•they have front or rear position lamps that are permanently disconnected, painted over or masked

(Don't forget, position lamps are your front and rear sidelights).

So, just turn up at the MOT station complying with either of the above conditions and your headlamps (which cannot now be included as a testable item), cannot be failed for aim, cleaning or levelling devices.

Contrary to popular belief, you will not be issued with a 'Daylight MOT certificate' - you'll get a normal MOT certificate with an advisory notice stating that lamps were masked/permanently disconnected/not fitted at time of test. Simples!

That wouldn't stop you getting nicked for construction and use but it'd have to be a really eagle eyed picky copper to do that. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

"The headlamp power wash will operate on every fifth operation of the screen washer, provided the headlamps are still switched on and approximately 10 minutes have elapsed since the last headlamp wash. Switching the headlamps or ignition off and back on again, will reset the cycle. Note: The headlamp washers are inhibited when the washer fluid reservoir level is low."

In addition the program is different in some terrain settings.

Overall I can just see non LR savy Kwik-Fit MOT tester failing your vehicle due to the headlamp washers not working

My son used to have real problems with this after driving across muddy fields and needing to wash his dirty headlights when he thought it necessary. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Yes Dorset,I had the same problem with dirt/mud thats why I'm the saddo who sat there counting them working

I would have thought perhaps a separate reservoir would be helpful as I can see that if they went off every time you washed screen it would not be long before emptying or the need to tow a bowser If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Tambora Flame

One of Terrys headlamp jets packed up years ago and yet I can't say I have ever noticed a difference in the cleanliness of one lamp over the other.

Our X Type was a nightmare for dirty headlamps as the small projector type lamps seemed to take little to significantly reduce their output. I think it was just a perfect storm of circumstances as the lenses were small and would get hot so any crud carrying water would dry instantly on the front of the lens. A lot of light from a small area would be much reduced as the crud built up.

Terry happily has big headlamp lenses which stay pretty cool. I also think the air flow across the front of the headlight does a lot to keep it clean.

I agree that, for serious mud plugging, the washer jets would be a noticeable asset. For road driving (on my Freelander) they are almost an irrelevance. ... I hope the MOT tester sees it the same way in due course.

If I read the comments correctly these new tests will not be applied to vehicles older than, or used before, the 1st September 2009.

2012 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Santorini Black

My headlight washers go every 5th time and they wash one light at a time, first the off-side then the near-side so both get washed in every washing cycle. I wonder if some unobservant/lazy tester will just see one light being washed and assume the other one is not working and issue a fail.

Edited for typo.

PS: I had a Disco 1 given a fail because the ABS light did not go out when the engine was started. This is not a fail as with the D1 the light should go out when the speed reaches 5mph.

you might need some mud guards Common sense isn't very common.

Yes, a very grey and contentious area.
Mudguards not needed for MOT.
Although I believe it's legal to drive without them, if the roads are wet, muddy etc, then that's when law states they are required and the police can then issue a ticket.
But that's assuming the police actually know the law.
[they tried to do my neighbour for not wearing a crash helmet ... on a trike, until he pointed the law out to the policeman]

Car is in garage at moment to have brackets fabricated and mudguards fitted. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-
