David Monks of the Rolls Royce Test Team clearly didn't learn how to drive off road in a Defender.

I think the driver would benefit from a Land Rover Driving Experience Day.

He doesn't seem to have a feeling for either the car or the terrain????? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Is this simply demonstrating the benefits of full 4x4 over AWD?

ie AWD is fine for Chelsea, useless without tarmac.

Don't know if it's a camera trick but the track doesn't even look that bad...
Besides, what is it with "luxury" car makers (LR, RR etc) making extortionately priced cars that have immense off-road capability yet will probably never even bounce up a kerb? Surely no one is going to off-road a rolls royce!?!?

Vanny, I don't understand what you are saying.

I believe the RR shown is an AWD vehicle, complete with all of the AWD tricks to allow it to travel on any surface.
I don't think it has a crude 4x4 system at all. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

@IanMetro

It might be worth a quick Google for a more expert description than I can give.

Fundamentally AWD does not have isolation between front and rear axles (no centre differential), so you can and ultimately will put all power through a single wheel and wonder why you are stationary. 4x4 allows independent control of the drive to the front and rear axles and is certainly not crude.

4x4 will handle very low traction surfaces well, AWD will not. Only option with AWD is to scrabble at the surface and hope you find traction.

maybe it's late
maybe I've had a Stella too many

but

A differential will always give power to the side (wheel or axle) that has least resistance - handy on a two wheel drive car going around a corner as the outside wheel needs to travel a greater distance than the inside wheel.

But the way I understand it, the FL2 (and my DS) doesn't have a centre differential, so power will always go to both axles, granted a front wheel may be spinning robbing the other front wheel of power, but because there is no centre diff, there will always be power going to the back axle via the Haldex coupling. If that is the case then you can only be stranded if a wheel on each axle is spinning - the car should then brake each spinning wheel, sending power to the two other wheels which presumably have traction as they have more resistance than the previously spinning wheels.

Best method - more speed, don't slow down and bounce your way through any difficulties - works for me Very Happy Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

This is probably the sort of explanation you require.

https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/whats-t...eel-drive/

I still believe that the RR is the more sophisticated system i.e. AWD and therefore the video is not showing a vehicle with full time 4WD.

I think the video was done for effect rather than to show any technique.

PS Andy seems to have an excellent description of the FL2s AWD system, when wheel slip is detected by the car's systems.
I believe that there is a limit to the amount of torque that can be transmitted to the rear axle, but it is pretty high. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
