Noise when Turning Left

Hi

I have noticed a noise when turning left at low speed whilst driving my Freelander. The noise is a low rubbing grinding noise.

It does not happen when turning right; it does happen when at a stand still and applying full lock and when whilst reversing on full lock.

Only the other week, the garage replaced my disc pad, and I was wondering whether this is my problem. I have checked as far as I can to see whether there is anything catching and I can't see anything obvious. Further, I have driven the car and then applied the brakes hard to see whether a stone has got caught, but no luck.

Does this sound like a brake pad/disc problem or something serious?

Turn left and apply very lightly the brakes and if the noise goes away its probably just the new pads. At some point they will generally bed in. If not just ask the same garage to tell you you why since the fitting of the new pads you have a problem with rubbing noises. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Thanks, I will give this a try tomorrow and if this the noise drops when applying the brakes.

I had exactly the same issue many moons ago, only happened when turning left (and not everytime I turned left), vehicle was under warranty and technician came out, sods law i drove around the block taking loads of left turns and it was fine - after ten minutes of going around in circles the noise started and the fault was diagnosed as a aux tension belt (if that means anything to you), i took it straight to LR and it was fixed within the hour, unfortunately for them as it was under warranty they gave me a n RRS as a courtesy vehicle so I kept that for 24 hours before collecting mine back - every cloud....

Thanks for your reply.

The noise didn't happen this morning when I drove to work, but when I go home this evening, I am going to take long way home and see if it starts.

Strange that a belt would cause this noise. Was any explanation given to you as to why a belt driven off the engine crank would cause this problem whilst turning left?

From what I recall having the air con on whilst having the steering on full lock (power steering) contributed to straining the belt - sorry I'm not technically minded, baffled me as to why it never did it on full right lock though....

Ok, after much investigation, I am still none the wiser on this. This is what I have been able to deduce:

1) No noise when turning left when the car still warming up/cold
2) Noise starts after the car has fully warmed up (say after about 4-5 miles
3) Doesn't appear to do it when reversing on left lock
4) No noise when turning to full left lock at a stand still
5) Only really audile at low speed
6) The noise is a sort of rubbing/whining/grinding noise as the wheels turn
7) Applying the breaks gently doesn't appear to make the noise go away - this is possibly that I am doing this at low speed
Cool No noise on right turn

As I said I have no recollection of this happening before the front disc pads being replaced

Does anyone have any idea what this might be??? Big Cry [/list]

When you replaced pads did you replace them with genuine Land Rover pads ? What I would do if you replaced them yourself pop the old pads back in, I once used EBC pads & they were very noisy I ended taking them out but it was not on a Freelander.

Unfortunately, the garage did the replacement. So, I do not know what they did. It is a LandRover spealist garage

I wonder if the front right sliding calipers is not moving freely and that you have a pad that's just touching the disc so that after a couple of miles the disc heats up. I had this on an FL1 once and the after driving for a couple of miles without using the brakes I stopped and one disc was hot. I would check this first. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I have tried stamping on the brakes to see whether that would make any difference. How was your problem solved in the end?

Easily really, I just removed the pads and made sure that the caliper could move easily then I put new pads on. The calipers use a single piston design and the whole caliper unit is free to slide around on two pins as the pads wear, the pins get cr Censored ap and corrosion on them so that the caliper effectively sticks and holds one of the pads against the disc. All you need to do is remove the pads and clean the pins up so that the caliper slides easily, your garage should have checked this when they replaced the pads really but changing pads is one of the easiest jobs on a car and you should have a go at this yourself. However I would still check the disc temperature after a short drive with minimal brake usage. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Move the tyres around the car taking note though if they are directional or not. Reset tyre pressures and road test. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Why not just take it back to the garage that replaced the discs & pads explain that the noise was not there before they worked on the car, see what they say

dont mess around with it or they might say its something you have done. gone
P38 v8 auto no problems,great howle from exhausts when giving it welly
Td5 auto head gasket,no5 pot not uncommon but good car.
1st Tdv6s manual epb problem fixed under warranty(stealer said"never heard of this before,i suggested he looked at d3 forum.
2nd Tdv6 se auto epb
3rd Tdv6 xs auto 2008,swmbo,s favourite.
