Before anti-freeze

I am interested in coal mining history and I have a small collection of mining memorabilia including a few miners lamp. One mining lamp company is still operating in the UK. I found an old advert the other day, must be from the days before antifreeze was added to the engine.

Light a lamp And hang it in your engine bay to help you start your car! I wonder if that will help with dodgy glow plugs too? Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Wow blast from the past there, I remember my dad using a parrafin heater similar to the picture top left in the garage under the sump of his Morris Marina, early 1980's.
Doesnt bear thinking about a fuel leak from a weeping carb or fuel pump!

My first experience of a motorist was my uncle in the 1940s and early 50s.

As I remember, his answer to avoiding frost damage to radiator was to empty the system. He also used to jack it up and put it on blocks when he wasn't using it. (most weekdays)

Extreme I know, and very irritating to a small child, who had to wait around while the car was re-commissioned, to take you on a trip to Gran's caravan. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Santorini Black

It's not that long ago that radiators and engine block drain taps were easily operated thumb taps, so easy to undo after use and left to drain themselves. The army used to start their engines every couple of hours so the were ready for use t short notice.

My wife once lodged with a dear old lady widow whilst she was looking for a flat for her new job. The old lady had a very large house and was obviously not short of money and said that she could keep her car in one of her garages. She opened the doors to show us and there was a heater running under the full length of the parking space. "Oh this is the garage where my husband kept the Bentley" she said.
