I took another video a few minutes later, only difference being I added 40l of fuel to the tank. In the first video the fuel light was on with minimal fuel. Ambient temperature was high.

Does this car use excess petrol to cool something? or have a fuel cooler?

This has happened once before with similarities, low on fuel and hot ambient temps...

You haven’t tried hiding a piece of sandpaper any where near the alternator bearing have you Rolling with laughter

Noisy fan belt or weak tensioner. Sounds like a belt slip noise to me. When the car is first started there is more load required from the alternator to put a charge back into the battery plus the belt is stiff and cold. As the car runs longer, there is less output needed from the alternator plus the belt has warmed up and is more 'grippy'. I’d change the belt to start with and check that the auto tensioner is not weak or sticking. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I should add that both times this has happened has been after several hours of use.

I checked the alternator load, no difference. Doesn't squeal at all when cold.

While it was squealing I revved it up and down a few times to see if the noise changed with rpm but it didn't, it stayed constant, which is what makes me think it's not a belt noise. Granted it certainly does sound like a belt noise and as a matter of course I shall change it BUT.....is it the belt....Hmmmm

You would be surprised but,
Many such noises have been cured by re-charging the ac system.
Try searching on here.

Good luck

All right, list of work done so far:

*Air Con regassed (needed it anyway)
*New idler pulley
*New tensioner setup
*New serpentine belt

But I still have the noise. Admittedly it is ever so slightly less as both the idler and tensioner bearings were in bad shape.

The noise disappears under accleration and reappears at idle. Sounds like a slipping belt noise but isn't.

Could it be alternator bearings, as Largered suggests? It is putting out 14.3volts at idle.

Just reading this post on AULRO, it may well be the alternator drive pulley on the motor side.

Thinking about it, I have had some flat/low charge battery issues recently on top of everything else. Perhaps this bolt is gradually loosening and causing the noise I have.

So its not the idler or tension pulleys or the belt itself. Unlikely to be the crankshaft pulley - which leaves Power steering pump, AC compressor or alternator. As the noise is at the startup may not be AC compressor as its unlikely to be working immediately. Jules

I believe that the alternator has some kind of one way clutch on pulley, which is there to stop belt flapping around when slowing and/ or unloaded.

Does the 3.2 petrol have an alternator clutch and if so does anyone know what the part number is for it? Is it the same as the diesel?

From what Ive just read I dont think the the Si6 (3.2L) has a clutch on the alternator pulley. In fact it doesnt look like the alternator is even belt driven.

From the JLR Workshop manual for Si6 it says ...

"The generator used on the Si6 obtains a direct drive from a shaft powered by the crankshaft; a coupling unit attaches the
generator to the shaft. This direct drive arrangement improves the generator's durability by preventing side-loadings,
caused by the tension of a drive belt, acting on the generator's rotor bearing."
No mention of a clutch

Whereas for the TD4 it says ...

"The generator pulley incorporates a one-way clutch that reduces Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH), and improves the
life of the accessory drive belt. The one-way clutch allows the belt to drive the pulley without slip occurring, but prevents
the generator from driving the belt during transients in engine speed ('belt whip') due to the high rotational inertia of the
generator internal components." Jules
