United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Alaska White
New Satnav

Hello,

Recently acquired a LandRover Freelander 2XS (2008) and it doesn't have a sat-nav. I've been looking into options and I'm really not sure. The car already has a stereo with Bluetooth telephone connectivity but we'd really like a sat-nav. Any tips/recommendations would be extremely appreciated.

P.S - We need to stay on the cheap side so nothing too expensive

Thanks

Get a Garmin Bow down
I much prefer my simple windscreen mounted Garmin over the optional fit (expensive) version that my wife has in her VW Tiguan. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Spain 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Orkney Grey

I have both a TOM TOM and a GARMIN 2589.

The TT came with my motorhome and I bought the GARMIN 2589 for my FL1 for £99, a week later it was £79.

No idea how much the TT was.

There is also a SATNAV in my FL2 and have yet to figure it out. So I use the GARMIN.

The TT has some nice touches too, for instance. POI shows campsites. Very handy if you have not booked for the night

Of the 2 my vote goes to the GARMIN as it tells you where all the speed cameras are, including Spain.
NOT THAT I SPEED.

Ukraine 2013 Freelander 2 2.0T SE Auto Fuji White

Bought a Garmin drive smart 61 for my last holiday. The 7" screen is nice, easy to use. I will mount it a bit closer. On the windscreen it is a bit too far out of reach. I don't need it for day to day use.

I prefer the north up view & it was good for finding the small outback roads not on real maps, although to see these you needed it to be at 500 metres resolution which is a bit annoying down under as small roads/dirt tracks are kilometres apart so there was a bit of zooming in & out.

Night view was good, not too much glare. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Another vote for TomTom ............. and for Garmin

why have one ......... when you can have both.

I use the Garmin mainly for UK and Both for European driving.
TomTom has Lat' & Long', which is good for off roading in Europe.

I haven't used my TomTom for a few years now (since Terry arrived) but it was/is a great piece of kit.

You could create and load your own POI files as well as download a lot from the web. What ever your interest is pretty much covered with a POI file, be it Racing Circuits, Stately Homes, B&Q, McDonald's or indeed speed camera sites.

You can generate your own POI files in the comfort of your home using Google Earth, or what ever, to establish the location of otherwise invisible Green Lane entrances and way points

I had a friend with a 996 Turbo and his view was the best thing about the Porsche sat nav was you could use the screen to stick your TomTom to.

While I now just use the Land Rover Sat Nav (because it is there) almost every time I went anywhere with friends in multiple vehicles their TomToms would work out much better routes than the Land Rover sat nav. It seems the Land Rover system algorithms just suck. I even set the Sat nav for routes I know just to see what bizarre options it comes up with. You get to where you want to go but often find yourself shouting "Why would you go there?" at the Sat Nav.

some pics in my gallery of my old Garmin install. Longer Power cable bought off amazon for a couple of quid fed down the back of the trim to the centre console aux socket fitted with a USB adaptor so it switches on/off with the ignition.

costs were well under £100 including USB adaptor, cable and nav unit.
