2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Narvik Black
Windscreen Wiper stalk

A few weeks ago, I asked advice on here, regarding my front windscreen washer not working. The back one worked okay.
I was informed that
(1) It's not the fuse,as there is only one fuse for both front and back
(2) It's not the pump, as there is only one pump.

This led me to believe that the fault could be with the wiper stalk. Yesterday, I went to operate the back windscreen washer, and for a few seconds, the front one worked as well. This was when I pulled the wiper stalk towards me to operate the back washer.

So, does anyone agree that the problem is with the wiper stalk? I don't want to buy one and find out it's not the problem.

Not sure what year you drive but on my63 plate, front wash/wipe is by way of pulling stalk towards me, rear is by pressing the end of the stalk.

It's a 2008 GS TD4. The front washer is operated by means of pressing the button at the end of the wiper stalk, and the rear washer, by pulling the stalk towards me. This has(was) been this way from new.

Same on early D4 vs later D4, for some reason the functions on the earlier switches didn't follow the 'tradition' but this was corrected on later cars. Cured it easily with my D4 by simply getting a set of later stalks & fitting them. Not sure it is as simple as that on FL2 as I think later cars have the fog light switch on the indicator stalk?

On my 2008 GS TD4 the wiper stalk on the right hand side of the steering wheel operates wiper settings and windscreen washer, front and back. The indicator stalk also works the high beam headlight but not the fog lights, which have a seperate switch.
I've ordered a 2nd hand stalk for £20 and will take a chance that this is the problem.

It is possible that the pump isn't working correctly.

From the service manual the pump has two outlets on for the front and one for the back.

The way that the outlets are switched is by spinning the pump motor forward or reverse.

If the motor only spins in one direction then it could be the cause of the problem that you describe.

For my 2008 I see the following part number LR002306

I wouldn't eliminate the motor from the list of possible faults without more testing

There are also relays and fuses to check

Good luck

Paul

Edit: there are two relays but the relays are micro relays soldered to the PCB in the central junction box. And the fuse for the power is common to the forward and reverse direction. Its most likely the stalk or the motor. Let us know which it is in the end.

Thanks for your advice and help. I've taken a chance and ordered the wiper stalk, which, for £20, is worth the risk.
Hopefully, it will be the part that's faulty, and I will let you all know either way.

Hi, I had similar problems with my indicator stalk and wipers. Indicate right and my wipers would start up. Not always but enough to be annoying.

Being fairly okay with switch gear, I removed the stalks and took the switches apart. Cleaned up the PCB, re-tensioned the copper contacts and refitted.

Haven't had a problem in two years now. I think you have invested well. Should sort your problem.

Further to my question about the wiper stalk, does anyone know how to remove the plastic cover that's behind the steering wheel and covers the streeling column and the wiper/indicator stalks. I need to gain access to remove the wiper stalk. EDIT: I've just lifted the top half of the plastic cover, but the bottom half is still attached somewhere, even after removing the screw from underneath.

Thanks.

Hi, there are two screws underneath. One is next to the adjustment handle. The other is at the top of the deep hole next to it.

Thanks. I've just found the other screw. I removed the wiper stalk, and, holding my breath, fitted the 2nd hand replacement. It worked Very Happy

I purchased the wiper stalk from a company called GOS (Gentlemen of Salvage.co.uk) for £24.95. I was pleased with the service they offered.

Windscreen Wiper stalk

I’ve recently had exactly the same issue on my 2007 TD4 HSE as valleyboy describes above, and went through the same fuse & pump checks to deduce that the fault was with the stalk, on which everything was working except the front windscreen washer function.

Bought a S/H replacement stalk from g-tec4x4 of Trowbridge for £29 (cheapest in stock that I could find on the net), followed westville’s cowl & stalk removal & fitting instructions on the Indicator Stalk Faulty thread, and all is now working fine - literally a 10 minute job max (including persuading my teenage son, who’s much more nimble than me, to lie upside down with feet through to the backseat & his head in the driver’s footwell to refit the fiddly torx screws under the cowl!).
