Timing Belt

Is it correct that you have to have a 'special tool' to remove/replace a timing belt? I asked a local garage today if they could do it, and this is what they said. But I had a feeling that they didn't want the job.

The only special tools required is the timing pin set that locks the crankshaft and helps set the camshaft timing. It can be bought for around £25 or so on Ebay. The Freelander timing belt is very straightforward to change and there is plenty of room to work on the engine. The 2.2 engine is fitted to a lot of different vehicles so perhaps try a Peugeot/Volvo or Ford specialist that should have the tools needed. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the reply. According to my local garage, the 'special' tool would cost a few £100's!

Steve.

See ebay item no eBay Item No. 152896337255 as an example of what's needed. Its a lot cheaper than buying the timing kit which is listed specifically for the Freelander! No connection to the seller! Thumbs Up

The special tool and overinflated prices are a scare tactic from someone who doesn’t want to do the job !!
I’ve seen it all before in my time in the trade. Hike the price up hoping they take it as it’s too much !!
