EGR error P0405 P - Reduced Engine Performance

Morning all,

I was wondering if any of you knowledgeable chaps might be able to shed some light on an issue my car developed over the weekend.

I got the Engine Performance Reduced message on the dash and the car went into limp mode (great on a dual lane 60 zone). Got it home and had error code P0405 P on the reader. Reset it but it re-appeared almost immediately.

Googling the code seems to suggest something to do with the EGR valve but was wondering if this code be anything to do with sensors which I can tackle myself, before i get it booked in.

thanks in advance.

Maybe not the same but this is my very first problem with my car.
Last month I had the 'Reduced Engine Performance' message and it went into limp mode, but cleared after a few minutes shutdown and restart. At the time I was close by to my dealer and they read the code, and it was an EGR related problem.
They booked me in for two weeks time for stripdown and investigation and ordered the parts in just in case. It was in for two days and complete EGR replaced with its cooler and sensor, luckily under extended warranty so probably just replaced everything without a deeper investigation, just told me it was 'gummed' up.
One of the downsides to exhaust gas re circulation is the slow carbon build up over time leading to the slow/non operation of the valve, which probably means the sensor is working and reporting that the EGR itself is at fault.

Erm a very costly code Big Cry

Before doing the full change of the EGR just check non of your turbo pipes are split between cooler etc etc as I still wonder if this was an issue - see below how I struggled and buying senors for me was wasted money.

Do the EGR blanking plates (£4 on ebay) help reduce the build up of the EGR valves as claimed? must be a worthwile mod if it does and has no negative side effects Question

If you have a DPF you can forget that idea even at just £4. Indie words not mine. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

May I remind everyone that the first thing to check with "reduced engine performance" and limp mode is the fuel filter and when was it last changed? The FL2 is quite sensitive to this and fault codes can be misleading. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

No, the first thing to check is the code and take it from there, a fuel filter problem is no way associated with the 'P' code listed in the OP's post. The '4' in the code points to emissions.

If a fuel filter blocks and fuel starvation happens a code will appear me thinks so its chicken and egg except my own first experience with reduced performance in a brand new Freelander 2 when it was Banging Head Yawn the dumb ass tow bar fitter screwing up the electrics. fuel filter problems usually show fault codes 'reduced fuel pressure'...'fuel pressure sensor (various terminology used after)this applys to most vehicles.

I have had two fuel filters give me "Reduced Engine Performance" but have no error codes have come up either time. I change the fuel filter every year now!

Out of the five FL2s I have had "reduced engine power" on three of them with no error codes which went away after a new fuel filter. A LR Assist guy even told me that early FL2s had problems with fuel waxing up in them in very cold weather which prompted a design change.

I have also had error codes show up which have been erroneous eg pinpointing a certain exhaust gas sensor and finding that it's the wrong one. The Filter issue is just one of those things that you have to watch out for. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
