sometimes wonder about that because if your car says you're doing 23MPH but your sat nav says 24MPH,which is right? If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

I go with the sat nav, never had a speeding ticket yet and I do a lot of miles. Sat nav reads lower speed. Common sense isn't very common.

won't be long before a solicitor in his Jaaaaagggg gets pulled, then sues the police for wrong full whatever as there is no proof that his speedo was incorrect at 71mph, or the speed gun, and he might as well add JLR in for good measure and will be on page 7 of The Sun, looking annoyed in his picture holding the ticket Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Its always has been excepted that a 10% margin of error exists in respect of the accuracy of any odometer.

I was always going to use it in my defence if ever pulled at 77mph, mind you in the thirty zone I may be stretching it a bit. Laughing FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

sounds like its just another avenue to filling the coffers Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

They can do you at 1mph over now if they wish . It’s only a discretionary policy document that advises 10% ( for speedo error) plus 2 mph for measuring equipment tolerances . I was actually on a “ Speed Awareness Course “ yesterday Rolling with laughter the one thing I brought away from it was that the technology for enforcing speed is getting cleverer and isn’t going to go away . So 3 more years of keeping my nose clean for me . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

I bought a Garmin GPS for a trip in the outback, mostly for unmarked roads on my maps. I noticed that on long flat straight roads the GPS continually changed compared to the car's speed, which was steady on the set speed. In general the GPS showed I could do 5 km/h faster, but occasionally up to 6 & varied down to 1 or 2 some of the time. Very occasionally the GPS showed a 1 or 2 km/h faster speed than what the car said. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I also "calibrated" my speedo using Sat Nav and GPS apps and know what to set my cruise control to when going through the miles and miles of SPECS cameras on the motorways.
Stops people tailgating me too - I really hate that- people seem to think that in the road the works you dont need any distance at all to stop.
Wiki says Total stopping distance at 50mph is 53m (and that's assuming they are not texting or dozing off) Jules

Points are active for 3 years , they stay on your record for 5. You may be offered a course instead of points if you have not attended a course in the three years preceeding the offence . I have no points , and I last did a course 4 years ago . The money from fines go to Government . The money from courses go straight to the Police and Camera Partnerships , so lowering the prosecution threshold generates more money for Plod , bless them . Well they need it don’t they ? look at how much it cost to tar and feather the long dead Ted Heath Rolling with laughter 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Any drink/drive convictions stay on your licence for 10 years, but the points for 3 from memory. (not from experience can I add, I personally think anyone who drives under the influence of alcohol or drugs would get a mandatory 3 year ban). Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018
