Hi guys,

So the Mrs was driving the car the other day and said it felt as though there was resistance when driving. I’ve had the car the past 2 days now and she wasn’t wrong. As well as resistance I feel slight rubbing/vibration coming through the accelerator pedal. I took it onto the motorway to see if it got any worse and it did, I started to get a noise coming from the front of the car, not like a whine but definitely a somethings not right noise, along with slight vibration in the seat. I took the car home, jacked it up and had a play with the wheels as my first thought was bearings, wheels felt solid though. Anyone know what this could be or have they experienced this before? Its very hard to explain, hope someone can help.

Yeah, brand new tyres on the car 2 months ago

Drive shafts/CV joints? Jack up each wheel and feel for play at each end of half shaft. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE

Just had my front offside bearing replaced. Sounded just like you say and my wheels were solid aswell. Just a hell of a racket coming from the front end 👍🏻

Thanks guys, I’m putting it into my local garage tomorrow to have a look/drive to see what they think. I’ve spent all night reading past threads and transfer box problems comes up a lot.
I don’t have a clue what that is but it’s sounds expensive, could that be the problem if not the bearings?

Transfer box is the “front diff” or power transfer unit. If it turns out to be that then bell engineering are the ones to see. If you look at my posting history I was leaning towards transfer box after reading threads, thankfully it wasn’t though. take it for a drive until you can hear the noise then weave left to right (if it is safe to do so obviously) and see if the noise changes as you shift weight. If it does it’s quite possibly a bearing

Thanks Ct8637, I had a wee look at your past posts. I’m swaying on just taking the car to a LR specialist I’ve read about rather than my local garage, only thing is it’s a 40min drive and don’t like the thought of that when there’s obviously a problem with the car. If it is the transfer box I’ll be sure to call Bell Engineering, here’s hoping it isn’t!

Jack up all four corners and place on stands, select snow (should make all four wheels drive) and start driving it. When all wheels are spinning at a half decent speed carefully reach and grab the coil springs if a bearing is gone you will feel the vibration on the coil spring. Also worth checking that none of the wieght have fallen off seen as it’s new tyres.

Jesus I would need an undercracker change doing that under one of these big heavy things

I hope it turns out a relatively cheap fix. It’s a horrible feeling when there’s something potentially expensive wrong with your car

So the mechanic thinks it’s the drivers side front bearing, getting them done tomorrow so hope that’s the end of it! Thanks for all your help, guys! Always good to get advice on these things, great forum!!

Great news! Exactly the same bearing as mine. Let’s hope yours doesn’t cause as much problems as mine. My driveshaft would not budge. They had to get the axel off and use a press to get it out. All sorted in the end though thankfully!

How much have they quoted you out of interest ?
