Windscreen wiper fault

Hi

My windscreen wipers suddenly stopped working.
It was some snow on my windscreen while i started the car and the wipers.
The wipers removed the snow. When i tried to start the wipers again, nothing happend.

I tried to do the following:
- checked the 30a fuse in the front
-switched the relays with the rear wiper relay (same relay)
-cheked the wiper motor. It looked fine.
- I had the wiper motor outside and put 12v directly to the motor. The motor and the wiper mechanisme rotated.

Does anyone know what could be wrong with the wipers?

Could it be the stalk switch at the steering wheel? Everything else is working on the switch exept the front wipers.

Best regards
Vegard

I have had a stalk replaced under warranty when the washers failed but I would be surprised if that was your problem. It is more likely connected with extra load from the snow on the screen. Some thoughts.

-When you had the motor out and spinning was it under load?
-Is it possible that you have stripped a gear so that the motor is turning but not driving the wipers?
-Can you hear the motor working but no wipers?
-I wonder if the snow caused some overload such that an overload detector has been tripped (is there such a thing?)
- Many years ago I had a wiper motor that would not always start and I stripped it down and found that the internal self parking switch/slider was burned. Not sure if modern cars use that technique for parking any more, a lot use a current sensing circuit to determine when they have hit an end stop in which case is the problem in the control unit (wherever that is)? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Thanks for the tip.
-The motor managed to spin/move the linkage mechanism.
So i dont think it is the gear.
-There are no noise or sign of load when i try to start the wipes
- That was interesting. Does anyone know where if there is a internal parking switch or controll unit somewhere?

Best regards

You say the wiper motor works when it’s out of the vehicle but are you getting a feed to the motor when in the car? In case something has tripped, try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and reconnecting it - sometimes cures numerous faults. One other thing and I’m not sure about the FL2, but some cars have wipers that won’t work when the bonnet is open - have you tried them with the bonnet closed? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Thank you very much! Now everything is working just fine!

I just diconnected the battery as you said. It was disconnected for about 15 min.
When i reconnected the battery, nothing happend.
Then i made some small jum cables and tried to jump between the relay connections. Nothing happend. I was giving up, and was about to leave my workshop when the wipers suddenly started. I dont know what did it, but maybe the system needed 5min to get back to normal after the battery was disconnected.

Thanks for the tip! You saved my day after two nights in the workshop with no resaults Cool
