Diesel VED from 2018

Ok so I'm a little confused with today's budget and how it will affect the 'road tax' on my 2013 FL2 auto.

Currently it's £240 a year but looking at some tables it could go up to 1200... or does that only apply to new diesels with similar emissions?

From how I read it, there will be absolutely no change to the VED of existing diesel vehicles but from April 2018, any NEW vehicles registered will pay more in the first year if they do not comply with the new emission legislation (whatever that is). Vans are exempt. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

I would say expect an increase in April 2018 for current users of FL2's come what may in VED in line with the RPI (no sure what month it will be taken at). FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Ok so not so bad for us existing owners then other than the usual annual increase.

My tax is due in March so I'll just scrape in at £240 and the following March 2019 is when my 2 year approved warranty is up so I'll reevaluate then.

The increase in line with RPI for existing owners is not too bad but I just don't understand the VED rules on new diesels post April 2018.

In the press it's written that "cars that do not meet the latest EU6 emissions band will face a fee that is one band higher than the current VED changes".

That's clear enough, but what new vehicles do not meet the latest EU6 standard? Surely they must under current rules so where is the "penalty" for continuing to buy diesel and where is the increased revenue?

I've listened to the Chancellor's announcement and I still don't get it. Confused Question driving on the right side

Disco Tax Hike

Read a piece on the BBC web pages this morning and although like many I am also confused it mentioned the odd car and a new Disco get a £400 uplift when first taxed (on top of what already exists I think). FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Text from a Financial Times article this morning

A near-£500m tax raid on diesel car buyers led a suite of measures to encourage motorists to switch to electric vehicles in an effort to improve Britain’s air quality.

Anyone buying a new diesel car will face an additional upfront payment of up to £500, while the government set aside £300m to accelerate take up of battery cars in Wednesday’s Budget.

“The tax system can play an important role in protecting our environment,” said Philip Hammond, the UK chancellor. “We owe it to our children that the air they breathe is clean.”

Despite this, the government chose to freeze fuel duty again, a popular measure that costs more than £800m a year to support.

The additional diesel car payment and higher charges on diesel company cars will raise £480m by 2021, the Treasury estimates.

Currently anyone buying a new petrol or diesel faces a one-off payment levied according to carbon dioxide output when they purchase the car.

This charge will increase for diesel cars by one tax band from April — so a diesel BMW 6-series will see its initial payment rise by £300 to £500, while a Land Rover Discovery will see its charge rise by £400 to £1,200.

Any new diesel car that complies with the RDE-2 test, that sees it emit less than 120 mg of nitrogen oxide gas (NOx) per kilometre in real world driving conditions, will be exempted from the charge. But cars that meet the standards are not expected to come into service before about 2020, when they are required by EU rules.

Mike Hawes, chief executive of UK motor industry lobby group the SMMT, said: “It’s unrealistic to think that we can fast-track the introduction of the next generation of clean diesel technology which takes years to develop, in just four months.”

He warned the changes would “add significant confusion” and stop people buying diesel cars, which had already seen their sales fall by 30 per cent in October compared with a year earlier.

The diesel tax, which does not apply to vans or light commercial vehicles, will feed into a £220m fund that local authorities can bid for in order to tackle invest in local air quality improvement measures.

A second measure will see taxes raised on diesel cars owned under company car schemes, bringing in an estimated £295m by 2021.

The Office for Budget Responsibility rated both measures with a “medium-high” level of uncertainty in an assessment published on Wednesday, meaning the government might not bring in as much money from the measures as it expects.

The government has set aside £200m — which will be match funded by industry to create a pot of £400m — to promote the roll out of more electric charging points, as well as another £100m towards discounts on battery cars for consumers.

In an effort to lead the way, the budget set an ambition that a quarter of all central government cars must be electrified by 2022 — raising the prospect of Philip Hammond arriving for a future Budget in a Tesla, rather than the British-made Jaguar XJ he used on Wednesday.

The government will also clarify the law so that motorists who charge their electric vehicles at work do not face benefit in kind charges, Mr Hammond said.

Of course if Hammond had allowed a rise in fuel duty it shows in the RPI and CPI figures so its all smoke and mirrors as usual. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Thanks, that's clearer. So by saying it's an increase on cars that do not meet the "latest emissions standards" it's actually only cars with emissions standards that do not yet exist that are exempt Wink . driving on the right side

Agreed and RDE-2 will probably will never exist for diesels. I can't see manufacturers putting any development money into diesels from now on. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Bad for your small local dealers then as you will be able to order a car in the rest of UK and avoid it. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

So, existing diesel cars first registered before 31/03/17 and not meeting the pollution criteria are to go up one VED band from next April. Am I reading this right? So my £305 current VED for my 2009 TD4 will rise next year to £520?! Derek Hill
