Nervous Puppy

I know that there are a lot of forum members who are dog owners and wondered if anyone else has experienced an overly anxious pup. We got this little fellow a month ago.

He has been great, settled really well and has got the basics of toilet training quickly. He had his second injection a week ago but is reluctant to walk outside of the garden. We live on the edge of a wood so I walk him straight out of the garden onto a footpath.

I am also having a few issues with car journeys. I have kept the journeys short and, the for the first couple of trips, allowed him to sit in the front with a seat belt leash. We went a little further yesterday (4 miles) so I put him on the back seat for safety reasons. He hated this and howled all the way followed by a giant Censored which he promptly sat in! I am an experienced dog owner but this is the first time I have had these issues with a Labrador. Is the best approach patience and let him dictate the pace of new experiences he can deal with or will I be storing up problems in the future? He is 12 weeks old. Any advice would be much appreciated.

maybe not over being taken away from his mother yet,

did you see the mother/litter ?

I think patience and calmness would be the best way forward to build his confidence.

I'm sure others will be on shortly with advice.

At 12 week old every thing is daunting for the pup just let him play about in the garden for a few week's and build up his confidence and bond with you. He is too young to walk far anyway as his bones and muscles need to form as for car journeys open the boot and let him play about in there but do not let him jump out feed him bits of treats and when he's happy with that repeat with the engine running for a short time. Keep any car journey to a minimum and the dog needs to associate travelling in the car with good thing's at the end at the minute it thinks it's having another needle or something unpleasant. There is plenty of time for taking him for a walk but not yet.the bonding is crucial at this age factor in playing with him to sit and come to you they will be the keystones for you and your dog just enjoy him being a pup for now.

.Animals and kids ..... same training needed.

There should be only ONE master.

They have to lean to obey and you have to learn to be consistent.

IT sounds to me you are doing everything right just be patient it will all come together. We had a Collie that was car sick for a year then it just stopped, she was nervous about going out and other dogs she got over it all eventually, lovely dog you've got.

Many thanks for the advice. I will continue with the patience approach. He is happy in the garden-hopefully he will get a little more adventurous with time.

Some dogs like to have a secure zone of their own, where they feel safe. An open cage in the corner of the kitchen and a dog crate in the back of the car can give that level of reassurance to a nervous pup. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Yeah, when we got our pup we made her sleep in a crate in the kitchen of an evening and we used to put a blanket over it to make it like a 'cave' where she felt safe. She cried for the first couple of nights and did a regular nightly poo for a good few weeks but when she settled down, we used to leave the door open and she would go in on her own each night through choice. Consequently, we had no trouble with her going in a crate in the car. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

do you have somebody who's got a older dog that yours could learn from? Common sense isn't very common.
