Diesel RIP ?

From Today's Financial Times

Higher taxes will be placed on new diesel vehicles in the UK in this months Budget, as the government tries to nudge drivers towards less polluting alternatives.

Ministers have been weighing whether to raise taxes to fund new air-quality initiatives or to find the cash through cuts elsewhere in the Budget since Michael Gove, the environment secretary, unveiled the governments Clean Air Strategy in July.

Government aides said Philip Hammond, the chancellor, has decided that tax increases on diesel cars is the best option and will announce the move in the Budget on November 22. It is not yet clear whether he will increase VAT on diesel sales or choose to create a new levy.

I wonder what LandRover's strategy is going to be? I don't see many petrol SUVs around. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

JLR will be fine. They will simply produce more cleaner petrol units along with more hybrid options. You can now even get a petrol Discovery Sport last year it was diesel only. Every LR model on sale in the U.K. has petrol options available. Diesel v Petrol variants:

Is it/was it not a case in the recent past that a Diesel engine variant was more expensive than the equivalent Petrol model....... because mpg was more economical.

And now no doubt that'll be reversed when a Diesel variant will be cheaper than a Petrol model ...... because it's more polluting.
(Except for Land Rover, where a Petrol variant will be more expensive. Confused ) Laughing FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

I come from a generation when fuel was 35p per GALLON !

So fuel is now 120p per Litre

Whatever the price of fuel ......... we will still buy it.

....... and some complain about it ..... Laughing

Yes I remember the days when you would roll up to the pumps and an attendant would come out and you would say "put a pound's worth in please" and feel like a big spender. You could also buy a round of drinks and have change from a pound. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

LR diesels are cheaper than their petrol variants

Evoque is approximately 12,000 cheaper
D5 approx 10,000 cheaper

Also remember that it is really only since the 200 Tdi engines appeared with the launch of the Discovery in 1989, that Diesel engines have overtaken Petrol engines as the preferred version for Land Rover models that spent the majority of their time on-road. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

In my early motoring days I remember pulling up to the (serviced) pumps in my 56 Austin A50 ( we really knew how to rock then) & said Four gallons please, nah, round it up to a quids worth. Whistle

Ed, I did say that LR petrol engines are more expensive than diesels. Wink FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Ah yes, my first LR - Ex- AA Series 3 LWB (the yellow paint showed under the green where I scratched it). 12 mpg though! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France

The chancellor will want to increase his overall tax take from diesel vehicles, so the price will go up, but not by enough to actually stop people from buying them (which would be counter productive for him).

Weve seen eye watering increases in first year VED rates for higher CO2 vehicles, especially those over 40,000, but idiots like me still continue to buy them! Sure, a proportion will drift away (probably the low mileage drivers who were buying pointless diesel superminis) but not enough to reduce the overall tax take, so this will not be the death of Diesel.

Interestingly, what we are seeing on the FFRR site is that some people, who might have bought a relatively low CO2 output / sensible mpg diesel variant, now justifying ordering an insane 5.0 V8 supercharged petrol version! Shocked
