Fuel line protection

I was out in the rough stuff a month ago, we got stuck in some truly horrible mud that was like plasticine. Anyway, back in civilization, I notice my fuel lines hanging down loose from the bottom of the car. It seems I have ripped off whatever protection they used to have when scraping my belly out of trouble. Is there a picture of the underside of the car somewhere that shows what the protection looks like?
This was all around 1000kms from anywhere so I'm thankful I made it back. Those fuel lines are just a rubber by the looks of it. Smile

I can't believe how much it smells under the car from the remaining mud from Mutawintji NP to White Cliffs! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Mate, thanks for that. From those pictures it looks like I've lost the lot somewhere. My car has almost 300,000 kms on it so I'm toying with replacing it, especially now that it has lost 4wd. It will be a shame to see it go, it's been a great car that I've given a heap of abuse to without it really complaining too much. It's been a good way to drop $60K over 9 years too....worth zip now. $60k over 9 years is probably better than most cars & you seem to have enjoyed the car! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Mike,

I just returned to California from Sydney and the Freelander 2 is very popular there. In the US it is less popular than the Range Rover (we call that an unintentional exotic)

For my budgeting I projected the following costs at 9 years

Total Cost $65497 US dollar or $86292 Aus. Dollar

Vehicle Cost $34342 US dollar or $45245 Aus. Dollar

Total cost = Depreciation, finance, insurance, tax and fees, fuel, maintenance, repairs

Vehicle cost
= Depreciation, finance, tax and fees

Depending on what you are including $60K sounds cheap

Good Luck

Paul

$60k is just the depreciation, no running or repair costs. That's what I get for driving it so hard and so far. Smile

Mike,

Got it!!!

I am in the same situation.

If I were to sell today I would only get about 10% of my original purchase price.

It doesn't make any sense for me to sell.

As I suspect that it doesn't make any for you.

That why I regularly visit this site so that I can get out in front of any issues and fix them inexpensively.

Examples of things that I've learned from Freel2 and other sites

- Change the Power steering fluid and reservoir/filter (the alternative seems to be replace hoses, pump and seals)

- Change the rear differential fluid and install a magnetic drain plug (the alternative is an expensive rebuild)

- Change the coolant at 6 or 8 years not 10 (the alternative is hoses and heat exchanger)

- Change the spark plugs every 50,000 miles (the alternative is replace the catalytic converter)

- Repair the vacuum pump when it starts leaking 3.2 liter (alternative accessory belt and possible electrical problems due to the mess)

- Flush the automatic transmission (alternative get a rebuild)

- Change the fluid in the power transfer unit (alternative rebuild)

- Change the Haldex filter and fluid (alternative rebuild)

By doing these I expect to get another 9 years from my Land Rover

And the good news is that the depreciation for the next nine years will be insignificant.

So just keep it until the wheels fall off and depreciation won't be a problem.

Good luck

Paul

That is great advice Paul. I wonder if that's why they say 90% of Land Rovers ever built are still on the road? Of course we will leave out the usual comment that follows, " the other 10% made it home". Smile

Mike,

That is really funny........

And I completely agree that a lot of people (in the US) have that perception (misconception?) of the brand

For me personally I've only had 1 Land Rover and I've been driving for 30 years.

And my LR2 (or Freelander 2) has been very reliable.

When the time comes to let her go I will likely buy another Land Rover.

I really like the look of the Range Rover Velar but I have a son at the university and a daughter that will be there soon.

In nine more years I should be ready Very Happy

Happy Motoring

Paul

PS have you figured out what you are going to do about the fuel line and Haldex?

The car is at my mechanic being fully diagnosed. We've determined the lack of 4wd is at the front end transfer box. I'm waiting on $$$ values to say fix it or sell. Personally I would like to keep it until the Defender replacement arrives. Cheers.

Mike,

Here is a video showing the angle gear. (its not in English but the picture are good)

In the video you can see that there is a splined sleeve that can wear out.

If this is the failure on your Rover then the parts cost wont be very high just the labor.

Let us know what the final solution is.

Good Luck

Paul

Hopefully it wasn't too painful.

Thanks

The coupling is cheap for a LR part - definitely change the seal at the same time. The splines on the transfer box tend to fail as they run dry, the autobox end run lubricated, so should last as long as the auto box itself.
False economy not changing the transfer box at this point - Bell Engineering in the UK do a service exchange service.

Note RH drive shaft on mine was also showing signs of wear, LH side was fine. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner
