Harsh rattle/grating noise over 2,000 RPM under load

Does anyone recognise this issue with a 2010 TD4?

When accelerating past 2,000 RPM, there is a noticeable harsh rattle/grinding noise that seems to be coming from the engine bay (but could be anywhere). The noise seems worse the more load there is, for example going up a steep hill. When the car is in neutral/park (its an auto), the engine revs fine with no noise.

More recently, the car seems to be slightly losing power and I'm convinced there is more diesel smoke on hard acceleration than there used to be.

What could this be? Fuel pump failing? Bearings in the turbo? Nothing on the car has changed recently other than fitting a new bonnet release/switch 2 weeks ago because of the common alarm issue. Car is regularly serviced by LR and has done 40K miles only. The rear diff bearings were replaced by Land Rover last year, I know the rear diff noise and it is definitely not that.

All help appreciated! 2010 HSE Auto in Santorini Black/almond with xenons and privacy glass.

Could it be the turbo? Worth checking all the turbo hoses!

Many thanks. Looks like I've found the problem. Top hose from turbo to intercooler.

I had that happen to mine earlier this year. Replace the hose with a 'QUALITY' hose, there are some cheap poor quality hoses out there. I had mine done by a 'non-franchise' LR Dealer.

Many thanks. As it happens, Land Rover only sell the turbo to intercooler hose as one part. I had the choice of paying £135 for that and picking it up from Harwoods Coulsdon this morning or ordering cheap versions of the top section only from eBay. I need the car today so I chose the Harwoods option - £100 more but like you say it is a LR original quality hose and now if the bottom one goes, I have that too. Smile

Part number is LR066429 and it looks like;

I just removed the short hose from the top and used that with the fresh jubilee clips;

Bit of a fiddly job, made slightly easier by removing the engine cover to let a little more light into the work area. But now all sorted. 2010 HSE Auto in Santorini Black/almond with xenons and privacy glass.
