Cha Cha Cha

I have a 2011 facelift SD4. I have had the car fir about 9 months and I love it.
I have done about 8000 miles in it since buying it. It now has just over 39000 miles.

Recently the car has started to 'stutter' ocasionally when changing gear. It doesn't change gear smoothly when this happens. It seems to be mainly from first to second gear but I think it also happens occasionally at higher speeds / gears but when under low engine load.

When it happens, the car makes a 'cha cha cha' noise. It sounds like it is coming from the grabox or central tunnel areas.
Where is the Haldex unit?
Could it be Haldex or gearbox?

Anyone experienced this in the past.

Thanks in advance for your help FL2 HSE Lux 2011 SD4 Gallway Green.

United Kingdom 2012 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Orkney Grey

Hello. I have a 2011 facelift TD4 auto with 50k miles and it has just done the same over the last 2 weeks. Haldex was replaced last year after pump failure so hope it is not that again. Seems like it can't decide which gear to be in, misses out 3rd and then jumps into 2nd and stutters and jumps before it settles down again. Getting in touch with my indie, DS automotive in Rayleigh over next few days to see if they can shed light on it. Will keep you informed. 12MY 61plate FL2 TD4 auto GS Orkney Grey Roof spoiler full size spare

Is the sound like this?
If yes, you should look a little to the turbo and its ancillaries...

A bit. Could it be turbo then? It coincides with a stutter which feels like a delayed gear change or a drop in power FL2 HSE Lux 2011 SD4 Gallway Green.

I have delivered at least two brand new Evoque autos that seemed to suffer what you call cha cha cha.

It seems to happen when you have been cruising along at a set speed and then want to accelerate.

It feels as though the box is confused for a second or two and it judders until it wakes up.

May be something totally different and both cars had less than 200 miles on the clock.

Latest report. Took it to DS Automotive in Leigh. They had it for 21/2 days. Connected it to diagnostic computer. Computer said no fault. 4 different technicians agreed there was a problem but it was so intermittent that they could not decide or agree what it might be. Rather than throw money at an undiagnosed problem they suggested continue to use it until the fault becomes more obvious and then look at a diagnosis then. All credit to them though, they did not charge me anything, not even for the diagnostics. 12MY 61plate FL2 TD4 auto GS Orkney Grey Roof spoiler full size spare

United Kingdom 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Barolo Black

Hi guys,
I have the same issue and I raised it to the main dealer while it was on its 2rd service from new (20k on the clock) It was exactly the same thing happened as mentioned here. It happened only on slow speed picking up from stop when gear changes from 1st to 2nd. (Auto)
While the 'cha cha cha' sometimes 'cha cha cha cha' happens, the power dropped with stuttering like skidding on the back wheels.

Main dealer said they cannot find anything special on the codes and they denied that there was a fault. What should I say... Rolling Eyes Freelander 2 XS MY 2012, 19" rims, Barolo Black. Privacy glass, spoiler.

Isn't it funny these days that these technicians can acknowledge there is a fault but because the diagnostic computer says there isn't one showing up they just shrug and agree there isn't a problem! Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the update Barry and thanks for the feedback chaps.

I took mine back to the supplying dealer today (Ongar Bridge 4x4) who a re a land rover / range rover specialist.

I have to say, their service was faultless. They made a technician available immediately who said he knew just what i meant by my description.
He took it for a test drive with me and was a able to recreate the issue and confirm it is what he thought it was.

He said it is the variable geometry turbo. He has seen it many times on FL2s but mainly on Autos. He said it is a characteristic of the Turbo which occurs when the turbo spins down, releases pressure and the revs are at a certain sweet spot. The auto hits the sweet spot a lot as the gear changes are determined but the manuals rarely do.
Apparently they have never seen an issue escalate beyond this. so he was not concerned and was confident that it would not cause an issue. He has seen it on cars with all sorts of mileages (Even very low mileages).
The technician said they used to change the turbos out when this was reported but it often made no difference and in some cases it made the noise more pronounced so they don't do that anymore.

They then took the car off to check the diagnostics (encouraging that they did not do this first) and found nothing but a low fuel message (?). They reset the code and did a software update relating to the EGR that 'could' be related to some intermittent loss of power issues.

SO....DO I TRUST HIM? YES....and here is why.

After he returned my car and explained everything, i mentioned a metallic rattle i get when starting the car. I showed him and he said ' i bet you have a stone caught in your cat heat shield...let me take it back and remove it'.
So he did..and he came back with the stone and no rattle.
He then stated that when they removed the bottom cover, they noticed an oil stain so investigated and found the rear (crank?) seal was leaking and suggested i book it in for a free repair.
So, they were definitely not avoiding work for the sake of it.

All round, excellent service and no charge. I shall keep an eye on the issue to see if it deteriorates but it was refreshing to be treated so well on a warranty issue.

Well done ONGAR BRIDGE
