virgin media Q's

got a letter saying i can now go to VM

not going to bother with the TV as i am happy with Sky at the moment, but will look at Broadband and Telephone

200mbps with anytime calls

Couple of questions, do i have to use their router? as i have a decent NetGear Router setup which is great for wifi around the house and gardens

Also i have the BT8600 Phone with call guardian and this has stopped all the calls from Mumbai telling me i need my windows fixing or accident helpline type calls, I know VM uses internet for calls, so would want to keep my phone if possible Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I have virginmedia and use a similar BT8500 call blocking phone perfectly ok.

Not sure about your router, as somewhere you will need to use a cable router to connect with incoming line. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Thanks, I’m sure I read I could use my router, just trying to confirm before jumping the BT ship

Glad my phones can work too Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

you would need to speak to VM to see what they say (I suspect they will say you have to use their supplied router as its not possible to change (translates to they cant be bothered to amend their records)

However you may be able to disable the wireless on their supplied router and configure your own wireless router off one the VM ports, depends how tech able you are to enter the admin pages on the VM router and your existing router to change the settings.

the phone itself should be no issue, just plug and play, however the call blocking features are normally configured on the switch by the ISP so these features may not be carried over.

The VM network itself is pretty stable, and fast as their backbone core network is running 100G and 200G links, but unless you have fibre directly to your home you wont be able to get those speeds. Most fibre now only goes as far as the street cabinet at best, and then old copper down to your doorstep.

I don’t know if things have changed but a few years ago when I was getting fibre broadband, I told them I already had the cables going into our home from a previous installation and they said that fibre was not the same as cable and that only Virgin had cables going directly into the house whereas fibre was as you described. I’d imagine they would be cabling right up to the house. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

VM have massively upgraded their core network over the last 4-5 years and are now running stable 200G links around the country.
Every ISP has a program to install fibre directly to every house in the country, where it was originally installed into the exchanges, then extended to the street cabinets. But to run it to every home is a huge huge expense as it will involve digging up streets, driveways etc and new equipment in the house that can accept fibre connections.
So only certain areas in the country are getting fibre to the home (FTTH or FTTP).
You may be one of these lucky ones, or like the rest of us still on copper cable that was probably put in by BT 34/40/50 years ago.

Been with VM for yonks now for BB, TV and land line.

Their BB is rock solid and flies - it sticks two fingers up to the competition. I'm sure in time you will probably switch to their TV too. The V6 box is very good.

Yes I believe you can put their modem router into modem mode only and then use your own router for your network. The latest dual band ac routers are very good though. VOIP is expected to be coming soon.I don't think VM are using internet for their phones yet although it is being trialled I think. They run a separate copper cable to your house for the phone - it is actually joined to the coax cable in a sort of figure of 8 configuration.

Don't worry about that fibre to the house issue with VM...fibre to the cabinet is way way more than you'd need when it is on VM systems. They run it to your house in coaxial cable and not a couple of tiny copper wires put up in the 1950s like BT or anyone that uses the openreach network. Fibre to the house is what openreach will have to do to get their systems on par with VM

Have been running on 200Mbs broadband for a while now..and yes you get the 200 even on wifi!!! They now do 300M

VM are pretty responsive when things do you wrong too.

If you are fortunate enough to live in a VM cabled area there is only one option for BB all the others pale into insignificance against VM

I would agree with all the above. (and I used to work for VM in the optical management centre) up til 3 years ago.

Wasn't aware that they now had 200-300Mbps to the home Shocked

Only reason I moved over to Sky was that once Id left VM I no longer got staff discount and Sky came in cheaper, I 'only' get a max of 36Mbps but that is more than ample for my needs (son in law online gaming and movie streaming). Especially when you consider that a very large amount of small/medium businesses still run over a 2Mbps link quite happily.

You have to use their SuperHub, but you can put it into "modem only" mode and then use your own router, as I have done. Steve

Would be nice if our village knew what "cable" was. BT have been fitting "fibre" this year........

BT fibre in your village will probably just be to the street cab (the only cab in the village Very Happy )

PlusNet just use BT Copper, same as most of the other providers that still use copper.

Its only the newer streets, where the ISP have installed from fresh that some of them have put their own copper or fibre in

Well aware of that Rog. Just didn't think it was worth it as they are only upgrading the fibre to cabs, not each house. ( although BT are doing the upgrade, Plusnet use BT lines)

you will still see a huge difference in stability and speeds with fibre
