Only changed two tyres… dreadful noise since.

Hi all

First time poster here looking for some friendly advice!

Had two rear tyres fitted in April and ever since have had a dreadful noise around 50-70mph.

My previous fl2 had a similar noise that resulted in a new rear diff but this sounded different. I’ve taken it back to the tyre garage who simply swapped front for back and said to see if it makes a difference. It didn’t.

I’ve now rang my local mechanic who said categorically they should have ensured I replaced all 4 and I could have irreversibly damaged the transmission and rear diff. It’s booked in with him next week and he said to wait for him to look at it, my question is, is it likely that it has caused damage that quick and if so, is there a challenge back to the tyre garage?

Thanks

Ryan. (A very sad fl2 owner right now)

As long as the diameter is within reason it's fine.

The noise issue is something else. Have you stuck on all terrain tyres, or ones that are more knobbly.

Put the new ones on the front, it's where they should go anyway.

A seperate issue as you have new tyres, as tyres age they get noisier. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Ideally all 4 tyres should be replaced at the same time, with swapping front to rear every 3,000 to 5,000 miles to even out the wear.

Are the new tyres the same size as the fronts? 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.

Where is the noise coming from ? front or rear of the car ?

As the FL2 is NOT permanent 4WD, having different tyres front vs rear is not such as issue as say with a old Defender or Discovery which didnt have Haldex systems.

But some tyres can be very noisy especially cheapo Chinese ones. What have you got on ? Jules

Wow so many replies so quick, thank you.

All at 235 19s, I’ll check make when I’m home from work and I’ll check depth. Definitely not the same on front and back though, they were a high end all season budget apparently, we do about 4000 miles a year at most in this.

The tyre garage felt the two old tyres were slightly out of shape and could do with changing, but I’m a little cynical of their advice.

When the new tyres were on the back the noise felt like it was from the rear, now though it’s predominantly the rear but reverberates all through the car. The fact it was the rear I was worried it was rear diff but there wasn’t the whining noise I remember when accelerating.

When we first drove our i6 homes it had an awful drone on the motorway (which never showed up during the test drive) and I thought “oh Censored , diffs Censored ” but upon measuring the tyres the rear were about a quarter worn and the fronts about three quarters worn, I changed all four and it became silent and smooth again as it should have been. Regards

David

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

Please let me know if anything in my post offends you, as I may wish to offend you again......

Im not sure there is a challenge to the tyre company as presumably you went there as you felt they may need changing??
Not everyone would know it is better to change all 4 as most cars this isn't the case.
I hope you get this resolved.

If it was the diff you would hear it start whining around 20mph & get louder as you go faster, my guess they have put budget tyres on.

I’ve got Sumitomo bc100s on the front, 235/55/19 105w

On the back Arroad extra frd88 235/55ZR19 105w on the back with about 1.5-2mm difference between front and back.

That’s exactly what I thought on the rear diff, if I need two new tyres to match then I’ll take that over a reconditioned rear diff or transmission repair!

Both Chinese.
I prefer named brands, which have a reputation to uphold, but that's probably just me.
Having said that my Freelander has Chinese tyres on it too, although they were on it when I bought it, and they're not wearing out as fast as I had hoped. Big Cry 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.

Indeed I was led by the garage but I won’t be using them again.

I can source another two sumitomos to be fitted Thursday morning, seems sensible over replacing all 4 given the current 2 are probably only 1000 miles in, then just hope it’s not damaged anything and see how she runs.

The noise you are hearing in my opinion is coming from the new tyres, cheap tyres are considerably noisier than premium tyres I doubt you have done any damage. But fitting another two same make tyres won’t cure the noise issue.

Always worth spending a little more money on decent brand tyres IMHO.
