Painting rusty locking wheel nuts

Noticed other day my locking wheels nuts are starting to rust a wee bit where the actual key pattern is. Has anyone successfully painted them? Don't want to paint them and wait 24 hours to put them back on the car only to find out the locking wheel nut key has removed the thin layer of paint Whistle MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

taken mine off,more trouble than they are worth,lock nuts can cause me grief when attending breakdowns,i live in the middle of nowhere,so unlikely to get wheels stolen.

About 6 months ago I brushed a bit of silver hammerite onto mine, just on the outer surface, looks tons better.

PS on the RRS I had a locking wheel nut strip ie the coded nut wouldn't grip - The solution was alarmingly simple, just bash a socket on with a hammer & bobs your uncle, off she came. so are they really worth it ? FL2 Ex D2, D3, RRS, etc. now all gone.

Or if you have the time.....

Apply rust converter (phosphoric acid) multiple times after cleaning, wire brushing & scraping excess rust off the surface. Use zinc primer, then under-coat & then top coat & then seal with final clear top coat!

I know what it is like..... the last few weeks I have been repainting arch bars in our 60 year old block of units with one of our other "keen" owners, stripping the arch bars back to bare metal & resurfacing, as mentioned above! In other words saving money doing the job properly which a so called "professional" will not do!

I removed mine as it was not worth the hassle.
In the last 10 years never heard about someone got his wheels stolen in my area.
