Injector driver module failure in ECU

Hi. I'm hoping that someone can explain what this actually means and what my options are to get it fixed, preferably in words a non-mechanic can understand.

By way of background, my 08 Freelander 2 developed a fault whereby it would randomly jolt and stall. I would then have to wait a short while before I was able to restart it. My usual garage ran a diagnostic on it which identified a faulty crankshaft position sensor, which they replaced. The following day I did my usual 70 mile motorway round trip and it was fine, but the fault recurred on local roads at low speed and low revs. I took it back to the garage who test drove it twice but with no recurrence of the fault. They ran a further diagnostic which gave the fault "injector driver module failure in the ECU". Unfortunately my mechanic doesn't feel it is something he is able to fix, so I can only assume it must be bad!

Does anyone have experience of this fault and can explain what would be involved in fixing it please? I did find an earlier thread on this subject, but wasn't able to follow it very well due to my complete lack of mechanical know-how.

Might help if you give the full fault code or put the full fault code into Google. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Good it's in your manual but I placed what I could find on Google and did say it was a Discovery Code not Freelander so not wrong as such. Working on a balance of probabilities a fair chance it could carry over if no other info coming up. Hope this was not too confusing Embarassed

http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic17379.html

So lets move it along off that Freelander Topix chart:

DTC Index
• NOTE: If the control module/component is suspect and the vehicle remains under manufacturer warranty, refer to the Warranty Policy and Procedures manual (section B1.2), or determine if any prior approval programme is in operation, prior to the installation of a new module/component. • NOTE: Generic scan tools may not read the codes listed, or may read only five digit codes. Match the five digits from the scan tool to the first five digits of the seven digit code listed to identify the fault (the last two digits give extra information read by the manufacturer-approved diagnostic system). • NOTE: When performing voltage or resistance tests, always use a digital multimeter (DMM) accurate to three decimal places and with a current calibration certificate. When testing resistance, always take the resistance of the DMM leads into account. • NOTE: Check and rectify basic faults before beginning diagnostic routines that involve pinpoint tests. • NOTE: If DTCs are recorded and, after performing the pinpoint tests, a fault is not present, an intermittent concern may be the cause. Always check for loose connections and corroded terminals.

So considering that note does it really need a new unit and if so where is that unit in relation to the engine and whats involved with fitting it ?

Who can read the 7 figure code, is that just Land Rover ?

Or is it just a corroded pin in a connector block ? FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Some background info off the net.

Injector driver modules, also known as IDMs, work with the central computer system and the fuel injection system in a vehicle. Only vehicles with fuel-injection systems will use an injector driver module. Engines that need high pressure fuel injection rely on injector driver modules to control the fuel injection system. The main purpose of an injector driver module is to control the amount and timing of fuel injection within the vehicle's system.

Newer model vehicles run off a central computer system that tells the different aspects of the engine system what to do and when. The computer operates through smaller modules and machines within the car to relay the necessary information. In the case of an injector driver module, when a driver starts the car and presses the gas pedal, the main computer system sends a signal to the injector drive module dictating the amount and timing of fuel. The module then sends that information to the fuel injection system.

Each engine operates the injection system differently. For example, a Power Stroke engine uses cylinders to supply fuel to the engine. When the central computer system of the vehicle senses that the fuel cylinder should unload, it sends a signal to the injector driver module. The IDM sends a modulated signal to an injector solenoid. The solenoid begins working and opens a valve to allow gas or oil through.

Diesel engines commonly use power train control modules to operate the injector driver module. An engine that fails to crank can be a module problem. If the control module does not send the injector drive module the signal to inject fuel, the engine will not turn over. An injector driver module can also lose power or receive damage, meaning the fuel injection system cannot function properly to operate the vehicle. Since the injector driver module runs off the main computer system, a mechanic can hook the vehicle up to a main repair computer to diagnose IDM failure. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Thanks Yorky Bob. No wonder my mechanic walked away! I have a sinking feeling that my local LR garage is going to be involved soon, which isn't something I want to go through again. £135 plus VAT per hour labour together with whatever else they can dream up, and then not necessarily fixing the problem anyway fills me with dread. My car was fine to drive today, so I will hang on until it happens again (if it ever does - fingers firmly crossed). My 15 year old Freelander 1 with more than double the miles on the clock was less trouble than this one, and I am beginning to wish I hadn't changed cars.

I wish I had never bought this blasted car. Now it has a distinct lack of oomph which suddenly corrects, and the engine runs rough for a short while before going back to normal. I'm aiming to book it into Gigglepin in Kent to see what they come up with, unless anyone can recommend any other LR independent specialists in Kent?

Thank you indeed Greybeard. Today I went to RCV, who couldn't have been more helpful. They ran diagnostics which led them to reset the throttle valve actuator (whatever one of those is). The best bit? They didn't charge me anything! So far so good - no engine cutting out, no juddering, and no hesitation when accelerating. Fingers are crossed once again.

Hello to you all.

I may have a problem with my Injector Driver Module, and am running out of options. Does anyone know where it is located? Is it part of the Freelander 2 ECU, or somewhere else.

Any thoughts much appreciated.
