Auto gearbox vibration

Good afternoon all,

I've had my fl MY10 for a week now and have noticed a vibration when around the 1500-2000 rpm range both at low speed and higher speeds. I have searched the threads and seems people have also had this problem but I can't find a definite answer as to what was causing it.

I have a 6 month warranty on the car so would like to get it sorted asap.

The vibration is similar to that which you would get if you were in too higher gear when driving a manual box. It also feels like it is stuck between two gears. It seems to happen more regularly when travelling uphill.

Any help is most appreciated

Excuse me asking but have you driven an automatic before? I have had quite a few in the past and find that you tend to control the gearbox with the throttle almost unconsciously. Sometimes mine seems to hang on to a higher gear going up a hill before it gives up and drops a cog or two. My old FL1 auto would behave differently depending upon how it had just been driven and I think that the FL2 is similar but not so noticeable in other words if I pootle (technical term) along and come to a hill it seems to hang on to the higher gear longer than if I had been driving a bit more quickly. Does anyone else recognise this behaviour? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Software update I think has been talked about but your car can learn your driving technique so I am told as my motor is manual.

thankyou for the reply Dorset.

Whilst I dont confess to being an expert I'm sure that this vibration isn't normal. This was also confirmed when I gave my dad a lift earlier in the week and he asked what these vibrations were. He has driven autos for the best part of 25 years and said that isn't normal.

The vibration is very noticeable through the body and also the steering wheel. It may we'll be that this is how the gearbox feels with the vehicle but I can't believe it, but having not driven other fl I have nothing to compare it to.

Like I said before it's like driving a manual car in 5th gear when only doing 20mph

Hi,
I've got this problem, seems to start at about 1600 up 2000 RPM when under load, I do a lot of town driving and notice it on any steep ish hills, once the car has pick up momentum then all seems OK,
I've had two independents look at it with no faults found! nothing binding, not a wheel bearing, nor prop-shaft joint, under shield was loose (slight improvement)
I have noticed if I drive with a bit more elan, then the vibration isn't so noticeable!!
Could be wear in the transfer box ie output shaft or bush/bearing as I'm at 86000 miles FSH
so I'll live with it as at the moment as I'm enjoying the ride.
Sorry I'm not more helpful at least you know you're not alone with it.

Have it as well on 2008 model, the premium diesel or adding TSO help a bit in refining it.
Put it on sport mode helps avoiding this range.

In my opinion it is a spot where the motor is working a bit rough which is normal but the fact it is getting in to the cabin is not.
I read here about a guy that changed his engine mounts and it did solve it.

Good tip Dresdner, tend to forget about the engine mounts until they're really bad,
I'll get my spanner man to price things up, although it'll be awhile as I've recently had belts, pump etc done.
annoyingly I exchanged a very nice Discovery TD5 for the Freelander and that also had a similar vibration just
around the 1700 > 2000 RPM mark, could it all be down to the turbo coming in?

had this on my MY10 and my current MY13, normally around 70mph @ 1700-1900 rpm. Its almost as if 6th gear is not set up right for UK Motorway cruising. Easing off the throttle a little (yeh right !) or pressing on a little to around 75mph seems to bring it out the vibration zone.

I'm going to try running it in sport mode for a few days and see if this makes a difference and if not I shall be taking the vehicle back for the garage to investigate.

I'm still thinking that these vibrations can't be normal as they are far to noticeable and there would be more people approaching the subject.

Hi, same vibration problem here with 2008 LR2 i6 engine.
Anyone checked his oil level ?
I flushed mine and after 2000 kms it started when moving slightly uphill on the way back in France and now back in the Netherlands it occurs when the gearbox is at working temperatures.
Did not check my oillevel yet by the way.

Hi all. I thought I would post an update on my problem. It has been back to the garage three times and each time they were convinced that the issue was due to fuelling. They firstly plugged it into the diagnostics to which they found nothing out of the ordinary. They then changed the fuel filter which made absolutely no difference. They have now been through the injectors and they have replaced 1 of them which they believe was sticking either open or closed.

I have taken the car out for a quick test drive this evening and in all it seems much smoother. I will post another update after I have given it a good drive over the weekend.

Fingers crossed I have found the route of the problem as there seems to be no definite answers online.

Hello,

I am unable to understand how to insert new topic hence replying on this post. Apologies if it causes inconvenience.

I have got Freelander 2 SD4. Message came up on the dashboard few days ago, Gearbox Fault Traction Control Reduced. I was wondering if anybody could help me understand what could be the size of the problem. I prefer not to go to the dealer as my experience with them has been truly unpleasant so far.

I purchased a similar vehicle from Wallis and Son at Barton - they sell a lot of Land Rovers and seem to know what they are doing.

I had just the same sort of vibration in mine when I first bought it some 2 1/2 years ago. Only showed itself when changing in to 6th gear. Seemed like the change was too soon. It is no longer there. I think it may be related to the "learning" of the gearbox. If you drive it like Miss Daisy it will change up a tad too soon. Drive it like you stole it and it's fine.
