I never found my first X3 to an overly firm ride albeit the FL2 was smoother, I believe changing form non-runflats would improve things massively but remember there is no space for a spare wheel in the boot. For my second X3 I opted for the VDC (Variable Damper Control) as I was having 20" runflats - makes a big difference and should be standard on all X3's but as typical BMW charge for everything that they can. Unfortunately not many people spec it on the options list as its something you don't see.

Just did an Autotrader search and of 1002 X3's only 3 (yes three!!!) have VDC Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black
Gone - 2014 BMW X3 M Sport Space Grey, faultless!
Gone - 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Bali Blue with xenons
Gone - 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Rimini Red with bodykit

Hmmm. and there was me back in 2010 having to have a haldex unit fitted to replace the one that was fitted just 6 months earlier, all on a FL2 that had done less than 30,000 miles and never been offroad..

Are you suggesting that had an affect on the ride quality?

PS: My 2011 FL2 is still going strong on its first Haldex Mind you, it’s just starting to eat it’s second rear diff but, at well over 170,000 miles, that’s none too shabby a record

The BMW X3 has gone at great monetary cost. The awful run flat tyres can be changed but the killer for me was the Servotronic steering (electromechanical) all right around town but on M ways it stiffened the steering up too much and was jittery. So much for "The Ultimate Driving Experience"
The search was on for an HSE blue, silver or grey late 13 or 14 Freelander. Not many about 3 in the country from dealers. Last Monday I want to forget. I travelled from Halifax to Devon on the train to look at an "immaculate" 24000 miler HSE what a mistake so back onto the train. Preston next Inchcape Land Rover where I bought a Grey 63 plate HSE with 40000 miles on the clock. I brought it home yesterday but guess what the detachable swans neck tow ball is missing! Why does it take them so long to respond to phone calls?
Anyway I'm happy with the car.

Glad to hear that you've found one. So, what's it like to drive after the BMW? Knowing that ride quality is important to you, is it running the standard HSE 18" rims?
