Modifying the Rear Diff with a drain plug

I've been and gone and done it. The drilling and tapping of the rear Diff box.

Thanks to the forum, I drilled out the existing 11.5 mm blind hole with a 12 mm HSS drill bit. It was too tight to use my 18v hand drill so I bought one of these and it worked very well to get in the space.

I tapped the 12mm hole out with a 14mm 1.5 thread pitch (2nd hand) tap. I used a 14mm 1.5 pitch sump plug and crush washer that I had lying around from my previous car. I have put a strong magnet on the sump plug in the hope it will magnetise the plug to catch any metal bits.

It makes a easy oil change for the rear diff a doddle. I have also put a drain plug in the front transfer box using the existing bolt hole.

It's been photographed and done before on the Front Transfer box

The rear diff has a blind drilling that needs to be drilled and tapped, or rather my one has. Again there is a prexisting photo showing the hole
