Keyless ignition - odd event

Has anyone experienced this? I was driving for some time then stopped the car whilst I went into a shop for about 10 minutes leaving two people in the car. The car was left unlocked with the key in one of the mug holder spaces in the centre of the car. When I returned and tried to start the car nothing happened but a message saying something like "key not found refer to manual". I locked the car and unlocked it and it started OK. I put new batteries in the keys a couple of months ago. Any suggestions? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Happens a lot with me as well. I've tried holding the key to the underneath of the steering column as was once recommended, but that doesn't work. I just single lock the car (when still in it) then unlock it and all is well. Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018

I would guess that you switched the engine off, which would mean in the 10 minutes you were away all the ECU shut down to sleep and the immobiliser enabled. The security system would then need to be switched on/off to switch off the immobiliser....

I've found the car can't see the key if I put the bunch in the cup holder or the storage cubby, I guess its just a blind spot! 2000 Xei 1.8 gone

Regular event. I just sit there and lock and unlock again, not failed yet.

Down to where I have put the keys I guess, always getting out after a trip and no ideas where I put them. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Again, a fairly frequent event for me. Nothing to be concerned about.
