Freelander 2 can tug 2000kg but how well can it do it?

I want to tug a 1900kg Caravan but I am not convinced the FL2 can tug it well, does anyone tug a van of that weight and how well does it do it?

If not it looks like i will have to go for a Disco 3 and the MPg will be down Sad when not tugging.

It will do it, but your biggest problem will be how stable it will be witha van of that size.

The kerb weight of the FL2 is about 1800KG. the recommending limit for the van is 85% of the kerbweight, but could be upto 100% for experienced towers. However, you should never exceed 100% of kerbweight. I guess the issue is the size of the van, and how it's affected by winds etc. A normal trailer wouldn't be affected by winds as much.

Unless you drive a lot with towing, I'd never go above 95% of the kerbweight. Also, that's the MTPLM of the van, not the unladen weight of the van.

I also think that in the UK, it can be ilegal to tow a van that's too heavy.

Worth looking on the internet at recommeded towing limits.

Hi yes i am an Experienced tugger, the van car combo would be a 99% match so not ideal. Ithink i am going to have to get a Disco 3 which is not what i wanted to do Sad

I tow a 1500kg single axles, without problem, and there is a few on here that tow twin axles but they'll have to tell you the weights

its an 05 buccanner Caravel Twin Axel.

I currently tug with a 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee but the local dealer is carp and i have had enough.

I love the Disco 3 but its expensive to run.

England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Baltic Blue

I use mine to tow a Fleetwood Heritage twin axle. MIRO is 1510Kg with a max permisible weight of 1700Kg. Given we have added a motordrive to the caravan we must be up towards the maximim. One of these days I'll get it weighed. My TD4 has no problem with this easily running at (or above Whistle ) the speed limits and going up some significantly steep hills with no problem. I thought my FL1 TD4 towed this van well but the FL2 beats it by miles.
Stability is fine too. The 8m towed length does mean that there is a big sail behind, but this does not bother the car. To be fair though, twin axles help with this and the van has a coupling head stabiliser. Our recent trip over Shap on the way back from the lakes was bumpy in the wind but never felt scary. This was the day that very high winds and rain washed out the fell race based around Keswick.

Assuming that the 1900Kg is the MTPLW, I would guess that the FL2 would pull it and would probably be stable. However, I have heard of police roadside checks which include weight measurements and you might run the risk of being caught out for towing a van over the 100% ratio. I don't know if they weigh the car too or just the kerbide weight and weigh the van He who dies with the most tools wins!

I have the xs model with auto gearbox.

My UK registration certificate gives the Mass in Service weight as 1970 kgs. I believe this is the weight that used to be called kerb weight. Add the weight of the fixed tow bar assembly and we are looking at nearly 2000kgs.

So your 1900 kg caravan would be under the 100%.

Rather than buying and running the more expensive Disco, would a change of caravan be feasible, especially if you added up all the costs say for the next 3 years?

I love the caravan to much to get rid, it is pure luxuary when we are away in it. If I were to sell it now i would not get enough for a van we would want me thinks.

I am going to see if i can get a dealer to let me test drive onw with a tow bar to see how it does it

FYI the 1900kg is the MTPLW of my van,

I am just far to confused Rolling Eyes

In the event of any contact with law enforcment agencies (Police or VOSPA) Then I'd be inclined to expect them to deal manufacturers specification, for towing limits and axle weights. I don't see what other reference they can take. It's the UK caravan issue where the 85% (and other %'s) 'advisory' stems from and its just that - advice.

We tow a 1500kg single axle van, and as others have said, it does it very well. I wouldn't have thought there will be an additional aerodynamic drag factors between my van and the van in the question at 1900kg and in fact you have the advantage of it being twin axle. Given the apparent ease of pulling our 1500kg then I'd be surprised if the additional 400kg suddenly turned it into a dog of an outfit! Stornoway Grey GS ...
