I am new to this site.

My son broke the stereo in my LD FL2. The garage we use suggested buying a used stereo from the exact model and replacing. Which I did. The garage is now saying they can't get the stereo to work as it needs to be reprogrammed to the car.

The seller of the stereo says they have never heard of this and they change stereos all the time. Unfortunately I do not live near them to change mine.

Has anyone had experience of this? Do I need to reprogramme the car?

You need to provide a lot more information, car model, car spec, year of manufacture, some pics of old and new ICE would be very helpful.
There is a range of ICE systems available in Freelander 2 and to be best able to help you you need to provide sufficient information.
As long as your replacing "Like for Like" it should work. I'm not sure if the Alpine System had a code that needed to be entered as I have the Meridian and it doesn't which is my point. MY15

I replaced the head unit ie the front panel on my GS model as the screen was cracked. No code was required. What I discovered is that the front panel is just that, and that the actual radio unit is a separate box behind it within the dash. So has this been replaced too?

I was told by landrover many years ago that the radio was locked to the original cars vin no,if that's true or not I do not know!

Its Rubbish....CJB, IPC, RCM maybe one other that's it.
Lots of modules will report the vehicles VIN but can be exchanged between cars.
Pre CAN vehicle's had a code that had to be entered but to my knowledge this is not the case with L359. Definately not Meridian equipped vehicles.
All L359 have a separate IAM (Intergrated Audio Module) behind the dash which is connected via CAN to the FCIMB (Front Control Interface Module B) which is the panel on the front with the buttons. It's the same architecture as all JLR vehicles. MY15

Well that may be so what do the initials mean?

Central Junction Box or Body Control Module (Main CCF)
Instrument Cluster or Instrument Panel Control (CCF Back up copy)
Restraint Control Module. MY15

Please bear with me - I am not a car person and don't understand the lingo.

I have a LAND ROVER FREELANDER S TD4 2007.

The pic attached is of my present stereo. I don't know what make it is - it came with the car when we bought it third hand.

The Head Unit, the bit that's hidden behind the dash (IAM) if you have the exact same module, please check the numbers on the unit should be this format XXYY-YYXYYY-XX, where X = A-Y and Y = 0-9. Last 2 "X" not critical but the proceeding should match on both units.
If you have exact same modules then it should work. MY15

I wanted to upgrade my brother in laws radio/cd player to the six cd version so would have not been like for like so perhaps could not have been retro fitted,landrover said it would have to be a new unit not locked to a vin number.

"Like for Like" was in reference to the original question.
There's plenty of threads on here for retrofitting higher level ICE.
As long as you don't have the Lo-ICE then it's possible to upgrade depending on your skills. MY15

Mechanical skills yes,electronics no.

I called up our local Landrover dealer who said they need to programme the stereo to the car otherwise it won't work.

They also want to charge £270 to do that!
