One of my front wheels has started 'peeling' never seen this on any car I've previously owned
Searched the site but can't find anything to help
Anyone have any solutions other than buy a new wheel

No problem there are any number of people who will come and repaint the wheel in a van parked on your drive. The good ones will prep the wheel, match the colour, make the repair and infra red dry before refitting the wheel. On the Freelander it should be a doddle. Had this problem on a Discovery TD5, and it's a situation that appears to be fairly common,
having talked about this with some paint specialists, we arrived at the conclusion of over use of TFR (left on to long) at the local cheap! car washes had allowed the acid content to attack the lacquer finish.
a good paint shop should be able to sort it out.
