Laptop/Car interface?

Calling car electronics experts.
Whilst trying to find a cheaper way of updating the maps in my satnav I started comparing the update method to when I update my Garmin. It seems to be similar in that you plug a USB stick into the car and upload the new maps.
Now, if a laptop could be plugged into that USB slot and if the satnav can be seen by the laptop, it may be possible to upload new maps by replacing the maps file in its memory.
I have the "Gen 2.1" version. http://landrover.navigation.com/product/Ca...erEMEA/GBP

I don't want to plug a laptop in just in case it start throwing wobblies which damage the car. Any guidance would be great.
Thanks. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

If you plug the laptop in to the USB it will only attempt to charge the battery, I have only suceeded in adding POI's from a USB stick to the system maps

Can I ask what POI you uploaded because I just tried to upload some of my own POI saved as a .gpx using Garmin Mapsource and, when I plugged the stick into the USB, went through the "More", "My POI" etc., nothing happened? MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

I have added 'GBFixedCam' in the gpx format and that loaded OK and shows the speed cameras on the mapping (a bit out of date), but as a Caravaner I attempted to load some sites abroad in the gpx format and these failed to load. I then downloaded them in the popular csv format to my desktop and used Poieditor.com online to change from csv to gpx, saved to USB stick they then loaded into the Freelander OK.
Some gpx files, it seems to have a problem with.

Forgot the link for the Camera POI's and it was updated in Feb of this year.

Again if the Garmin gpx doesn't work then download the Garmin csv and use the convert programme.

Are you sure about the "only charging" bit? Because, thinking about it, there must be a connection between the USB port and the satnav for the POI to upload.
I'm comparing the procedure with plugging my garmin into the PC for updates. It comes up as a hard drive and I can see all the files in there and change, delete and generally play around with them.
If I can get a PC to "see" the FL satnav hard drive it might be possible to change the map file to a newer Garmin set. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE
